Late Touchdown Gives #24 DelVal Football 21-17 Win Over Lebanon Valley On Homecoming

The 24th ranked Delaware Valley University football team scored a go-ahead touchdown with 14 seconds left in regulation to defeat visiting Lebanon Valley College, 21-17, on homecoming Saturday in Doylestown.

The late heroics improved the team to 6-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play. For DelVal football, it was the program's 50th consecutive win against MAC opponents – a conference record streak that dates back seven seasons to October 29, 2016.

Trailing 17-14 with 1:14 left in regulation, the Aggies had a chance to tie the game with a 23-yard field goal but fell short. The defense stopped the Dutchmen on three-straight plays and DelVal used all three of its timeouts to get the ball back to the offense at the Lebanon Valley 44-yard line with 52 seconds to play after a punt.

With no timeouts, Louie Barrios IV hit Luan Avidjaj over the middle for 29 yards to get to the Dutchmen's 15-yard line. After a short pass to Ryan Loughlin for five yards, DelVal spiked the ball to stop the clock with 19 seconds to play. Then on 3rd-&-5, Barrios, the junior signal caller, took the snap from the shotgun and threaded a pass over the middle of the field to junior Luan Avdijaj who caught the ball at the two-yard line and dove into the end zone to give the Aggies a 21-17 lead they would not relinquish.

Lebanon Valley got the ball back with 14 seconds on the clock but on first down, Jacquez Mabin sacked Tanner Lewis for a loss of six yards. A failed hook-and-ladder attempt on second down ended the game and the DelVal sideline, along with the jubilant homecoming crowd, erupted in celebration.

The Aggies held an 8-6 lead at halftime after stringing together a 10-play, 68-yard touchdown drive on the first possession of the game. They ran the ball every play with sophomore tailback Jack Fallon and Barrios combining for nine carries and all 68 yards. Fallon capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run. DelVal ran a two-point conversion play that saw Nick Arcaroli hit Dillon Shamanow to make it 8-0.

Lebanon Valley answered on its first drive of the game with a trick play that resulted in Braden Bohannon finding Jay Sisko all alone down the sideline for a 61-yard touchdown. A failed PAT kick helped DelVal maintain the 8-6 lead at the break.

Out of the break, the Dutchmen went 3-and-out, and the DelVal offense went back to work with its ground attack. Barrios ripped off a 29-yard run to get the ball to the Lebanon Valley 18, and Fallon finished the drive with an 18-yard touchdown run, his second of the game and team-leading eighth of the season. The extra point attempt caromed off the upright and DelVal took a 14-6 lead with 9:42 left in the third.

With 1:58 left in the third, the Dutchmen called upon their kicker Tim Kissinger, who missed a 56-yard attempt in the first half, for his second field goal attempt of the game. Kissinger split the uprights from 49 yards out and the Dutchmen pulled within five, 14-9, with 1:58 on the third quarter clock.

On the Aggies' first drive of the fourth quarter, Lebanon Valley forced its second turnover the game as Nick Arcaroli went under center and looked for Dillon Shamanow on the near sideline, but the pass was tipped, and James Jackson was there to intercept it and return it 27 yards to the LebVal 35 with 13:08 left in the game.

On the ensuing drive, the Dutchman used a 10-play, 4 minute, 20 second drive, to take their first lead of the game. Logan Klitsch had two runs that went for 25 yards and got the ball inside the DelVal 10-yard line and Bohannon punched it in with a two-yard burst. A successful two-point conversion made it a 17-14 game in favor of the Dutchmen with 7:43 left in regulation. That set the stage for the dramatic finish.

The 21-17 victory is the narrowest of decisions during the DelVal win-streak against the MAC – the previous was seven points (twice).

The Aggies finished this game with 354 yards of total offense including 238 yards on the ground and 116 yards through the air. It is the sixth game in a row with over 200 yards rushing. The team averaged 5.5 yards per carry and completed 9-of-18 passes with one interception. Fallon accounted for 170 yards of offense with 131 yards rushing, 39 yards receiving, and two touchdowns. Barrios threw for 116 yards and a touchdown and ran the ball 14 times for 76 yards.

Avdijaj had his biggest game of the season as the junior wideout accounted for 62 yards including three runs for 15 yards and the two big catches on the final drive to win the game.

Defensively, DelVal held the Dutchmen 3-of-13 on third downs with 92 yards rushing and 214 yards of offense for the game. Ahmad Jones led the team with 10 tackles from his linebacker position and Jacquez Mabin made seven stops with a sack.

Lebanon Valley won the turnover battle 2-0 with the interception and forced fumble and recovery by Luke Pollock. Pollock added 12 tackles and a sack. Ryan Enright led the team with 15 tackles to go with a forced fumble and Brody Robinson had eight tackles.

The Aggies will look to remain perfect in conference play next week when they host 6-1 Stevenson at 12 p.m. in Doylestown.
