DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University men's soccer team made it four wins in a row with a 5-0 rout of Gwynedd Mercy University in a non-conference tilt on home turf on Thursday night.
The Aggies improved to 5-2 overall while the Griffins dropped to 1-9-1.
Bennett Nordhoff got the offensive outburst started with two goals separated by just three minutes, 27 seconds in the early going. In the seventh minute, the DelVal defense forced a turnover and moved the ball up the field nicely with Danny Henson threading a through pass to Nordhoff who made a move around the keeper before depositing his first of the night in an open net.
Moments later, in the 11th minute, Nordhoff danced through a number of Griffins defenders and slid another passed the keeper for his third of the season and an early 2-0 lead. The Aggies outshot the visitors, 14-2 in the first half and neither team had a corner opportunity.
In the second half, it was Henson that found his second goal of the season off a well-executed set-piece by the Green and Gold. Dan Arone took a free kick from 40-yards out and sent a high-lofted ball into the box where Thomas Fitzsimmons headed a ball near the end line, back into the box, and right onto Henson's foot for the easy goal. Arone and Fitzsimmons were credited with the assists.
Just 10 minutes later, it was Arone's turn to find the twine as he took a feed from Rourke Watson at the top of the box and laced a low left-footed shot into the far corner to make it a 4-0 game in the 63rd minute. It was the senior's third goal of the season.
Pierce Marks capped the scoring in the 80th minute as a rebound off the post caromed his way and he got his left foot on it to find the open net to seal the 5-0 triumph.
DelVal finished the game with 27 shots, 14 on goal, while the Griffins had just three shots and one on target.
The Aggies will look to make it five-in-a-row on Saturday as they kick off Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play at Lycoming College.
