Record-Shattering Day Highlights DelVal Softball Doubleheader Split At Albright

READING (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University softball team exploded for 21 runs and set multiple program records en route to a 21-1 triumph at Albright College in the opening game of a double header. The Lions avenged the loss in game two with a 7-2 victory over the Aggies.

DelVal moved to 11-26 overall with the split while Albright went to 4-28.

Senior Olivia Monismith had a career day in the circle and at the plate. With her first of nine strikeouts in the game, Monismith reached the 200-career strikeout milestone. At the dish, she set a new single-game program record with seven RBI and matched another single-game mark with two home runs in the game. She finished 3-for-5 with seven RBI and four runs scored and pitched five innings with nine strikeouts and just two hits and one earned run allowed.

First-year Emily Merrigan matched Monismith with a two-home run game and went 3-for-4 with six runs batted in, four runs scored, and a walk. Junior Carly Mahal reached base five times with four hits and a walk and set two single-game program records with five stolen bases and five runs scored.

First-year Sierra Ripka, the team's steady lead-off batter, set a new single-season record of her own when she eclipsed 115 at-bats.

Makenna Cooper added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI and senior Alyssa Gerdy went 2-for-4 with four runs driven in and a run scored in the rout.

In game two, the Lions got out to a 7-0 lead after four innings thanks to a four-run fourth. DelVal got on the board in the fifth when Monismith hit a bases loaded single through the left side to score Cooper and make it 7-1.

In the top of the seventh, the Aggies loaded the bases with two out and Ripka scored on a wild pitch, but a strike out stranded two and ended the game at 7-2 in favor of the home team.

Yasmine Gonzalez, Mahal, and Ripka each had two hits in the game and Monismith picked up the lone RBI.

Albright finished with nine hits and their first two hitters led the way with 2-for-4 efforts and two RBI apiece.

The Aggies will conclude their 2022 campaign with a conference doubleheader at King's on Saturday, April 30, at 1 p.m.
