WILKES-BARRE (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University softball team dropped a pair of contests at Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe King's College as it put a bow on the 2022 campaign.
The Monarchs took game one, 3-0, and game two, 8-0, and finished their season 20-11 overall and 11-5 in league play to earn the third seed in the conference playoff tournament. The Aggies finished 11-28 overall and 3-13 in league play, and finished seventh out of nine teams.
King's held DelVal to just four hits in the two games and scored 11 runs on 11 hits of its own.
In the opener, neither team had a hit through three innings until Carly Mahal got aboard with a lead-off single in the top of the fourth.
The Monarchs got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Kiersten Krouse worked a lead-off walk and later came around to score on an infield single by Gabrielle Visconti.
In the next half inning, DelVal had runners on first and second after a single to center by Yasmine Gonzalez and Alyssa Gerdy reaching on an error. The next batter popped out, and Gerdy was thrown out at third after a rundown to end the inning.
King's tacked on two more in the sixth and kept the Aggies to one base runner the rest of the way to secure the 3-0 win.
Senior Olivia Monismith went the distance in the circle and struck out five batters with three walks and two earned runs allowed on three hits against. Her opposition, Brandi McIntosh, struck out six Aggies and allowed three hits and two walks.
In game two, DelVal's lone hit came in the top of the second when Caitlyn Pollock singled through the left side to put runners at first and second, but the threat was halted after a strikeout.
The Monarchs blew the game open in the third with seven runs on six hits and an error. Harley Sullivan highlighted the spurt with a two-run triple to left center.
The Aggies were held without a baserunner the rest of the way, and King's scored one more in the fifth for the 8-0 final.
Katherine Beckett pitched 2.1 innings and allowed five earned runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Monismith finished the game and allowed one earned run on three hits with two punch outs.
Emily Novicki earned the win with one hit allowed, two walks, and three strikeouts.
