Game Recap: Softball |

Comeback Falls Just Short in Game Two as Softball Loses a Pair to Stevens

DOYLESTOWN (PA)--- After giving up a 4-3 lead late in game two, the Delaware Valley softball team put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't push the tying run across, as the Aggies fell 5-4 after dropping game one 14-0 in five innings.

GAME ONE

Stevens (12-16, 8-6) took advantage of three walks, two hit-by-pitches and collected three hits in the top of the first to push six runs across the plate. The Ducks tacked on one more run in the seventh on an RBI single to extend the lead to 7-0.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Stevens kept the bats rolling in the fifth, scoring seven more runs on eight hits to lead 14-0.

Yasmine Gonzalez picked up the only hit for the Aggies (10-25, 3-11) with one out in the bottom of the fifth.

Kaitlin Smith fired a shutout for the Ducks allowing just one hit with three walks and six strikeouts.

Alex Schoellig went 4-for-4 with four RBIs for Stevens and Amanda Delorme went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Jessica Guerrero, Siobhan Cottell and Rachael Prescott each had a pair of hits for Stevens.

GAME TWO

The Ducks put the first runs on the board in game two on a Delorme two-run double to lead 2-0 in the top of the second. DelVal answered in the bottom half of the frame with a run thanks to an RBI single by Caitlyn Pollock.

After the Ducks added a run in the top of the third, Bailey Smith and Yasmine Gonzalez each came through for DelVal with RBI singles in the bottom of the third to tie the score at 3-3 after three.

After Olivia Monismith kept the game knotted up by pitching a scoreless fourth inning, she hit a grounder to third with Sierra Ripka on second base. The throw to get Monismith at first sailed high and allowed Ripka to come home to give the Aggies a 4-3 lead after four innings.

Stevens threated in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded and one out. Rachael Prescott smoked a one-hopper to first and Gabrielle Landis extended to take away a hit and record the out at first. The groundout brought home the tying run to make it 4-4.

In the top of the sixth, the Ducks put runners on first and second with one out. Yasmine Gonzalez fielded a grounder at shortstop, tagged second for the second out of the inning, but her throw to first was late for the double play. On the throw to first, Elise Fauske hustled all the way around from second base to score to put Stevens ahead 5-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, Yasmine Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and Adina Brucie walked to put two runners on with two outs, but Kaitlin Smith, who came on in relief in the third inning, picked up a strikeout to end the game to pick up her second win of the day.

Carly Mahal and Caitlyn Pollock each picked up two hits for the Aggies in game two and five other Aggies recorded a hit.

DelVal will get right back at it tomorrow for a doubleheader at Albright at 3 p.m.
