Bielen Leads The Offense And Bullpen Shines In 7-4 Home Win Over Gwynedd Mercy

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team scored five runs in the fifth inning to fuel a come-from-behind victory over non-conference foe Gwynedd Mercy University at Frank Wolfgang field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Griffins (7-9) struck first with a four-run second inning on five hits. Nate Campbell lead off with a double down the left field line and two batters later, Frank Ebling drove him home with a double of his own. T.J. Brasier and Nick Price connected for two more doubles and combined for three RBI to put the visitors up by four after two.

In the bottom of the second, the Aggies (6-6) got a lead off single by Hank Bielen but Gwynedd Mercy turned a double play to end any threat.

Bielen got things started again in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out single to left that sparked a streak of four-straight singles for DelVal and resulted in two runs. Kenny Tunison and Jared Sterner picked up the RBIs as Bielen and Kelly came around to score to cut the deficit in half and make it 4-2 after four.

John Slover came  on in relief to pitch the fifth and got the shutdown inning the team needed as she got a ground ball double play to end the inning.

The offense kept things rolling in the bottom of the fifth as Tyler Mellinger led off with a single and the team worked six walks in the inning resulting in five runs and a 7-4 DelVal lead. Gage Ambruster highlighted the frame with a double down the right field line that drove in two including the ultimate game-winning run.

The Aggies brought in three relievers the rest of the way and allowed just three hits over the final three innings to secure the victory.

Dakota George made his first start of the season on the mound and went four innings with three runs allowed on seven hits and no walks. He struck out three of the 19 batters faced. John Slover came on in relief to start the fifth and pitched two innings of one-hit ball with a walk and a strikeout and earned the win. Derek Cannon, Ethan Saxe, and Alex Crim pitched one inning in relief each. Cannon retired the three batters he faced in consecutive order, Saxe allowed two hits and a walk but struck out two batters to get out of a jam, and Crim earned the save with one hit allowed, one hit by pitch, and a strikeout.

Bielen got on base all five times he was at the plate. He had two hits and three walks, came around to score twice, and had an RBI. Ambruster also had two hits and drove in a pair and Kelly had a hit, two walks, two runs scored and an RBI.

The Griffins threw seven different pitchers in the game including starter Billy Collins who went three innings and allowed one hit and two walks with four strikeouts. Four different players had a two-hit game including Brasier who drove in a pair and scored once.

DelVal will resume conference play with a three-game weekend series against the Stevens Ducks beginning Friday with a 3:30 p.m., nine-inning contest at Frank Wolfgang Field in Doylestown.
