SWARTHMORE (Pa.) – Junior Brett Ziegler scored three times, but host Swarthmore College started the game on a 9-0 run and cruised to a 14-5 win over the Delaware Valley University men's lacrosse team on Wednesday night in a non-conference tilt.
The Garnet (5-2) scored five in the first quarter and five more in the second while holding the Aggies (1-5) to eight shots on target and one goal for the first half. Trailing 9-0 with under two minutes to play in the half, Brandon Keller got DelVal on the board with his fifth of the season.
The big first half proved to be the difference as the Aggies matched Swarthmore in the second half with four goals apiece. All of three of Ziegler's tallies came in the third including two in the final six minute off assists from Tony Aguyao and Mike Korenkiewicz.
The Garnet scored the lone man-up goal of the game in the fourth quarter when Cooper Bucklan fed Michael Hardiman for his third goal of the second half to make it 14-4. With nine minutes left in regulation, Michael Florig found Keller for his second of the game and the 14-5 final.
Swarthmore got goals from nine different players led by three apiece from Hardiman and Ben Schaeffer. Carter Strauch had a game-high four points on two goals and two assists.
The Garnet only won 9-of-23 faceoffs as a team thanks to a 12-for-19 effort from Aggie first-year Nick Matthew who added a team-high seven ground balls and two caused turnovers to his totals. Florig added four ground balls and four caused turnovers to his one assist.
DelVal was 16-for-22 on clear attempts while the home team converted 22-of-24 clears. The Aggies were 0-for-6 on extra man opportunities and the Garnet went 1-for-3.
DelVal will return home for two games next week beginning with a 7 p.m. affair against Immaculata University.
