Big Second Half Leads Women's Basketball Past Lycoming On The Road

WILLIAMSPORT (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team used a big second half to come from behind and earn a 69-61 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory over host Lycoming College on Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies moved to 6-11 overall and 2-8 in MAC Freedom play while the Warriors dropped to 5-15 and 4-7.

Sophomore Haley Keenan got DelVal out to an early 5-0 lead after connecting on her first two field goal attempts including one from beyond the arc. Keenan scored the first nine points for the Aggies who held a 9-5 lead after the first three minutes of play.

Lycoming responded with an 11-0 run over the next 5:23 as it pulled ahead for the first time behind baskets from five different players.

Jenna Schiessl halted the run with a pair of free throws, but the Warriors hit a pair of their own from the line to take an 18-11 lead into the second.

After Scarlett King got on the board to start the second, Lycoming scored the next six points to take its largest lead of the game, 24-13.

Keenan scored or assisted on the next 10 points for DelVal and King closed the half with her second field goal of the day to help the Aggies cut the deficit to eight, 33-25, at the halftime break.

In the second half, the Warriors grew their lead back to double digits and led by as many as 13 with 7:31 left in the third quarter.

DelVal stormed back with a 14-2 burst over the next 4:26 of play to pull within one, 42-41. First-year Jess Williamson had five points, Keenan had three steals and six points, and Moretti added three points and two assists in the run.

Moretti added four more points before the end of the third as the Aggies kept it a one-possession game, 49-46, going into the final 10 minutes.

After grabbing an offensive rebound, Moretti eventually took a pass from Keenan and connected on another trey to tie the game at 49-49 early in the fourth. After a bucket by the Warriors, Moretti came right back down and hit another trey to give DelVal its first lead since the first quarter.

A 3-pointer from Mya Wetzel put Lycoming back in front, 58-57, with under five minutes to play and forced the Aggies to respond.

The Green and Gold did just that with a 8-0 run over the next four minutes to seal the victory. Moretti started the run by hitting a pair of free throws, Williamson got a pair of steals and went 3-for-4 from the line. DelVal closed the game by going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe to earn the 69-61 triumph.

The Aggies shot 42.9% (21-for-49) from the field and 41.2% (7-for-17) from 3-point land for the game. Keenan led all players with 22 points and a career-high six steals to go with six rebounds and three assists. Williamson reached career bests with 14 points, five rebounds and four steals while Moretti pitched in 18 points and six rebounds.

Lycoming was just 19-for-59 (32.2%) from the field and 4-for-18 (22.2%) from deep in the game. Allison Butler scored a team-best 12 points with eight rebounds and two steals and Emily Lockard added 10 points and nine boards.

The Aggies will look to make it two-in-a-row next Wednesday as they visit Stevens Institute of Technology for a 6 p.m. tip.
