ASTON (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University men's lacrosse team fell into an early hole at Neumann University on Tuesday night and could not surmount a comeback big enough to escape as the home team held on for an 11-7 non-conference win.
The Knights (2-0) got five goals from five different players in the first and held the Aggies (0-2) to just two shots that missed the cage to take a 5-0 lead into the second.
Neumann's Rich Marshall scored his second of the day in the early moments of the second stanza, but DelVal chipped away with two goals in the final five minutes of the half. Brandon Keller fed Jack Sprinkle to get the Aggies on the board before Keller found the back of the net himself to make it 6-2.
Neumann tacked on one just before the halftime whistle as Marshall netted his third to make it 7-3 at the break.
The Aggies outscored the Knights, 4-2, in the third to pull within three, 9-6. Nick Bogdon got the run started as four different players scored in the spurt and Keller picked up two more helpers.
In the final stanza, DelVal outshot Neumann 14-5 but could not beat the Neumann keeper until the final minute of the game when Keller netted an unassisted tally. Marshall added one more before the final whistle to lift the Knights to the 11-7 victory.
The Aggies forced 31 turnovers in the game and committed 26 of their own while going 29-for-33 on clear attempts and holding the hosts to a 21-of-29 effort. The Knights doubled up DelVal on faceoffs with a 14-7 advantage. On special teams, the Aggies held Neumann to just one man-up goal on eight tries, but went 0-for-3 on extra man opportunities of their own.
Keller finished with six points on three goals and three assists and had four ground balls while Sprinkle netted two goals and Chris Dearden dished out a pair of assists. Defensively, Michael Florig had four caused turnovers and Brett Ziegler scooped 11 ground balls. Jim Murphy went the distance in goal and made 11 saves in defeat.
Marshall led Neumann with four goals and Brett McLaughlin added two goals and an assist with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers. Jake Marchiafava recorded 10 saves between the pipes and earned the win.
The Aggies will play in front of their home crowd for the first time this season when they welcome in Lebanon Valley College for a 1 p.m. start.
