DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) -- The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team celebrated senior day before its final home weekend game of the 2022 season in which the Aggies dropped a 64-44 decision to Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Wilkes University.
DelVal honored its lone senior, a five-year contributor with over 100 games played in her career, team captain
Lauren Moretti, who recently eclipsed the 1,000 career-point plateau and is nearing in on 500 rebounds. Additionally, she has recorded 151 made 3-pointers, 188 assists, and 171 steals.
In this one, the Aggies (6-13, 2-10 MAC Freedom) got out to a slow start and shot just 3-for-14 from the field and 1-for-3 from 3-point land. Conversely, the Colonels (7-13, 5-8 MAC Freedom) came out strong and shot 6-for-14 from the field including 5-of-8 treys to help open up a 19-7 lead going into the second quarter.
DelVal's last lead came at 7-6 after
Kaela Stankiewicz forced a turnover and found Moretti for a mid-range jumper. From there, Wilkes hit four-straight triples as part of a 17-0 run that bled into the second stanza.
In the second quarter, the Aggies woes from the field continued as they hit just 2-of-15 attempts. They found success at the free-throw line where the team was 8-for-13 in the second. Wilkes cooled down to the tune of 4-of-12 shooting in the second with a perfect 4-for-4 mark from the charity stripe and maintained a 32-19 lead at halftime.
Near the end of the third quarter, DelVal put together an 8-2 run thanks to consecutive layups by
Haley Keenan and a trey from Moretti to cut the deficit to 11, 44-33. Just before the end of the stanza, Jordyn Jennings had a put-back layup to make it a 13-point game going into the fourth.
Moretti connected from beyond the arc twice in the first 3:26 of the final frame to help the Aggies pull within 10, 51-41, but Wilkes responded with an 11-0 run capped by a pair of free throws from
Alexa Jones to pull away and ultimately secure the win.
Moretti finished with a double-double and game-highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds to go with three steals and an assist.
Jess Williamson followed with 12 points and three rebounds including a 4-for-6 effort from the charity stripe. Keenan finished with 11 points and four boards. DelVal went 4-for-4 from deep in the fourth quarter and finished the game 6-for-15 (40%).
Four different players that reached double-figures in scoring led Wilkes including Katelyn Kinczel with 12 points with six rebounds, and Brianna Horton with 11 and five boards. The Colonels shot over 40-percent (21-for-51 from the field and 7-for-19 (36.8%) from deep.
The Aggies will conclude the regular season at home on Tuesday night against conference rival DeSales at 6 p.m. All nine MAC Freedom teams will qualify for the conference postseason tournament this year. DelVal currently holds the eighth seed, one spot ahead of FDU-Florham, and would host the #8/#9 game in the first round of the tournament if nothing changes.
