ELIZABETHTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team took on undefeated Elizabethtown College, host of the Yonnie Kauffman Blue Jay Tournament, and dropped an 84-59 decision in the opening round game.
The Blue Jays shot 65-percent from the field in the first quarter and raced out to a 33-11 lead after one. Four different players scored for the Aggies (6-5) in the stanza including Alexis Wright who had five off the bench.
DelVal held Elizabethtown without a basket for over four minutes in the second and trailed by 21 after a Taylor Richardson layup made it 38-17 with five minutes left in the half. The Blue Jays used the final five minutes of the stanza to expand their lead to 33 points at the break. Richardson led DelVal with six points and five rebounds.
The Aggies outscored the hosts, 38-30, in the second half but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. DelVal shot 53.6-percent (15-for-28) from the field, 7-of-8 from the foul line, and turned the ball over just six times in the second. Maisie Neuber connected on 6-of-7 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws in the half to lead the way with 14 points.
Neuber finished the game with a team-high 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting, five rebounds and two blocked shots. Richardson followed with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting with five rebounds and three assists. Wright contributed 14 points and four boards, and Haley Keenan scored nine.
Elizabethtown had 12 different players score including Summer McNulty who had 15 and DaniRae Renno who scored 14 with five rebounds. The Blue Jays outrebounded the Aggies, 45-23.
DelVal will play in the consolation game tomorrow against York College at 2 p.m. Elizabethtown will play Washington & Lee for the tournament championship at 4 p.m.
