SCRANTON (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team paced five players in double-figures scoring and earned its fourth-straight win with a 78-71 non-conference victory at Marywood on Wednesday night.
The Aggies improved to 6-4 on the season and handed the Pacers (8-2) just their second loss of their campaign.
First-year Sophie Chevres and junior Jenna Schiessl got DelVal out to an 11-2 lead after 3:07 of play. Schiessl hit a pair of 3-pointers and assisted on another while Chevres scored the first five points. Chevre finished the first quarter with seven points while the Aggies held Marywood to just seven points as a team and took a 15-7 lead into the second.
The Pacers cut the Aggie lead to five early in the stanza before a jumper by Schiessl ended the run. First-year Alexis Wright scored the next five points to extend DelVal's lead back to 12, 22-10, with 4:09 left in the half.
The Pacers fought back with a 10-5 run to end the half and make it a 27-20 Aggie lead at the break.
Chevres and Schiessl had eight points apiece, and Wright had seven, to lead DelVal in the first half.
The Aggies made 11-of-19 field goals and turned the ball over just two times while outscoring the home team, 25-15, in the third quarter. Eight different players scored in the stanza led by Haley Keenan's eight and Wright's seven, and DelVal took a 52-35 lead into the final ten minutes.
The Aggies' lead grew to 19 early in the fourth after a three-ball from Wright off an assist from Keenan.
Over the next seven minutes, Marywood went on a 23-8 run to pull with four, 66-62, with 1:23 left in regulation.
DelVal was able to hold off the Pacers down the stretch by breaking the press and connecting on 4-of-6 free throws to close out the seven-point road victory.
Wright shot 10-of-21 from the field including 2-of-3 from deep, and 3-of-5 from the line, to finish with a career-high 25 points and 14 rebounds to go with three blocks and a steal. Chevres added career-highs of 12 points and seven assists to go with four rebounds and four steals. Keenan scored 12 points and dished out six assists while Richardson notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with five assists and two blocks. Maisie Neuber added out the double-digit scorers with 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field. Schiessl came off the bench to score eight points with a pair of treys, five rebounds, two steals, and a block.
As a team, DelVal shot 30-for-69 (43.5%) from the field, 7-for-15 (46.7%) from deep, and had 25 assists.
The Aggies will try to extend the win-streak at the Blue Jay Classic hosted by Elizabethown College this weekend.
