DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) -- Visiting Stevens Institute of Technology, the defending Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom champions, led wire-to-wire and defeated the Delaware Valley University men's basketball team, 67-50, in the first league game of the season.
The Ducks improved to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in MAC Freedom play while the Aggies moved to 3-4 and 0-1.
Stevens jumped out to an early 10-1 lead before a jumper from
Justin Savage and a trey from
Tyriq Toney-Bailey made it a four-point game, six and a half minutes in. The Ducks responded with a 9-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a double-digit lead, 19-8.
A 3-pointer from
Casey Caruso and a layup by
Rasheem Dearry got DelVal back within six, but a 14-6 run by the visitors to close the half set the Aggies back, 33-19, at the break.
Stevens shot over 50-percent (14-for-27) from the field and held DelVal to 7-of-25 shooting in the first 20 minutes. The Ducks made there money in the paint in the first half, outscoring the home team, 22-6, from there.
The teams traded layups to start the second before a Conor Coffey trey extended Stevens' lead to 20, 43-23. DelVal got to within 14, but never any closer as the visitors continued their hot shooting and finished the game 26-for-51 (51%) from the field while holding the Aggies to 21-of-58 (36.2%). Rebounds and turnovers were near even for the game with Stevens holding a slight edge in each. The Ducks finished with 36 points in the paint compared to 26 for the home team.
