Men's Soccer Falls In Heartbreaker To Berkeley

Box Score

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University men's soccer team scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of regulation, but visiting Berkeley College came back to the tie the game, and won the contest in the 85th minute with Eliseo Arevalo's second goal of the game.

Thomas Fitzsimmons helped the Aggies (4-3) to an early start with a pair of assists off set pieces. In the third minute, he took a free kick from just outside the box and Danny Henson went up and got his head on the ball to break the nil-nil tie. Off a corner play in the ninth minute, Fitzsimmons sent a perfect ball into the box again and this time Pierce Marks was on the other end for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Knights got one back in the 32nd minute when they earned a penalty kick and Esteban Pedrueza went low left to make it 2-1. Aggie keeper Quinn McCarty guessed right and got his hand on the ball, but it was not enough.

Early in the second half, Eliseo Arevalo capitalized on a DelVal turnover in its own territory and slid one past McCarty to tie the game at 2-2. Then, with just over five minutes left in regulation, Berkeley earned a free kick deep in Aggie territory and Arevalo stepped in to take it. He bent a ball around the wall, off the far post, and into the net for what proved to be the game-winner.

The Knights had eight shots on goal to the Aggies seven, and each team had three corner opportunities. Five yellow cards were give to Berkeley players and two to the Green and Gold side.
