DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University softball team hosted Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Lycoming College in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon and dropped a pair of contests, 9-5 and 10-0.
The Aggies (1-7, 0-6 MAC Freedom) committed a two-out error in the third inning and the next batter, Taylor Gessner, capitalized with an RBI single through the right side. One batter later, Mrogan Wetzel hit a three-run homerun over the left field fence to make it 4-0. Another error in the inning allowed the Warriors to make it a 5-0 game.
DelVal responded in its half of the third with four runs on five hits. Madison McClary led off with a double to the left field line and Megan Torrey got aboard with a walk. Jessica Stewart drove in both runners with a double to deep right-center. Olivia Monismith followed with a double off the fence in left field to plate Stewart, and another double two batters later from Caitlyn Pollock brought in Adina Brucie to make it a 5-4 game after three.
Lycoming (4-2, 4-2 MAC Freedom) got every one of the four runs it surrendered back in the very next frame thanks again to a DelVal error that started the spurt and RBI singles from the six and seven-hole hitters. The Warriors held a 9-4 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.
The Aggies got the first two runners aboard to start the fourth and Stewart picked up her third RBI of the day with a single to center, but three strikeouts in the frame helped the visitors keep their distance, 9-5.
DelVal threatened again in the sixth with McClary and Makenna Cooper at second and third with one out, but could not capitalize as Lycoming held on for the 9-5 win in game one.
Pollock went the distance in the circle and suffered the loss after not allowing an earned run and striking out four with three walks. On the other side, Kylie Russell earned the win as she pitched 4.1 innings in relief and fanned six with four hits against.
McClary went 4-for-4 in the game and Stewart was 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBI, and a run scored.
Game two was all Warriors as pitcher Payton Whary put on a show in the circle with a four strikeout perfect game as she retired all 15 batters she faced. The offense scored five runs on four hits and an error in the second and four runs on four hits in the third on its way to the 10-0 shutout of the Aggies.
