Eastern Comes From Behind To Defeat Aggies, 20-19, In Doylestown

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University women's lacrosse team led for over 55 minutes but visiting Eastern University scored five unanswered goals down the stretch to earn a 20-19 non-conference win.

The Eagles improved to to 1-1 overall while the Aggies dropped to 0-2 on the season.

First-year Ashley Birmingham opened the scoring for the Aggies (0-2) with her first collegiate goal just 14 seconds in, and that sparked a 4-0 run for the home team over the first 6:28 of regulation.

The two teams combined for 18 goals in the first half with DelVal maintaining a four-goal lead, 11-7, at the break. Seven different players scored for the Aggies in the stanza including first-year Belle Walls who got her first career goal and Jaden Keefer who had three.

Eastern decreased the lead to three goals in the first 24 seconds of the second half, but the Aggies responded with two of their own separated by less than a minute to make it 13-8.

The two teams went back and forth over the next 17 minutes adding five goals apiece, as DelVal maintained a five-goal advantage, 18-13.

The Aggies grew their lead to five on three different occasions in the second. Shannon Petrillo scored her second and third of the day with just under 11 minutes to play to give the Green and Gold an 18-13 advantage.

The rest of the way, DelVal saw two players leave the game with multiple yellow card violations and the Eagles capitalized with a 7-1 run the rest of the way to complete the come-from-behind victory.

Amanda McKeegan led the way up front for DelVal with five points on four goals and an assist, but she received two yellow cards and was unavailable down the stretch. Keefer also finished the game with four goals and Birmingham finished with three goals and an assist for four points, as did senior Sabrina Butler. Petrillo set a career-high with her first three-goal showing.

Amanda McKeegan and Sadie Strober each had seven draw controls and Gabby Borst grabbed five while keeper Rebecca Kingsley made eight saves in the loss.

Eastern was led by a game-high seven goals from Hailey Ferry. who added a game-high eight draw controls to go with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Allison Andres and Ellie Pruitt were also impressive with three goals apiece.


DelVal will look to bounce-back on Wednesday when it travels to Hoboken, Nj. for its first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom contest of the season against Stevens.
