MADISON (Nj.) – First-year Jordan Gombs scored a career-high 21 points and the Delaware Valley University men's basketball team never trailed en route to a 63-40 triumph over host FDU-Florham in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom tilt Thursday night.
The Aggies moved to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in league play while the Devils (0-5) remained winless.
DelVal controlled the opening tip and eventually found Ryan Black open beyond the arc for a 3-0 lead.
FDU tied the score at three apiece before the Aggies went on a 27-7 run over the next 10:53 to open up a 30-10 lead. Gombs led the way with 12 points as DelVal committed no turnovers and forced three at the other end during the run.
The Aggies held the Devils under 30-percent shooting in the first half while connecting on 14-of-25 (56%) themselves as they maintained a 37-21 lead at the break.
FDU came out of the locker room and went on a 7-0 run to cut their deficit to single digits, 37-28. DelVal responded with a 7-1 run of its own and later in the half held the home team without a basket for a stretch of over eight minutes as part of a 17-1 run that gave the Aggies their largest lead of the game, 61-34, with under four left in regulation.
Gombs' career-high 21 points led all players in the game and he added six rebounds. Black followed with 15 points on four made treys. Matt Paulus added 12 points, all from beyond the arc, and led the team with four assists.
The Aggies shot over 45-percent from the field, nearly 43-percent from deep, and 80-percent from the charity stripe while committing just nine turnovers and outrebounding the home team, 38-27.
These two teams will close the regular season tomorrow night at FDU at 7 p.m.
