Softball Falls To Simmons In Florida

CLERMONT (Fl.) -- Freshman Jessica Stewart and sophomore Olivia Monismith combined for five hits but it was not enough as Simmons University held off the Delaware Valley University softball team's comeback bid to take an 8-5 victory at The Spring Games in sunny Clermont, Florida.

Simmons improved to 5-1 overall while the Aggies fell to 0-8.

The Sharks got on the board first in the first inning as Molly Hennessey drove in Lauren Del Vacchio with a sacrifice fly.

Stewart led off the second with a double for DelVal and Monismith advanced her to third with a single. Three batters later, Adina Brucie dropped a bunt and beat out the throw and Stewart came in to score the tying run.

Simmons came right back in the bottom of the second as Dal Vacchio drove in two with a single to left center field to make it, 3-1. Later in the frame, with two outs, Christie Bott sent a deep shot over the left field fence for a three-run homer to extend the lead to 6-1.

The Aggies fought back with four runs on five hits in the fourth and fifth innings. Monismith laced a double in the fourth and later scored on a double steal play. Stewart singled in the fifth and drove in two runs, and Monismith followed with another RBI single to make it a 6-5 game in the fifth. The Sharks got one back in the bottom of the fifth on a Danielle Carson RBI single to make it a two-run game going into the sixth.

DelVal had three base runners over the final two innings, but could not get anyone home as Maddie Castigigliego shut the door and earned a two-inning save.
