DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with the conference front-runners, but ultimately could not tame the Misericordia Cougars in the its final game of a three-game Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom home stand, and fell, 65-57.
Shayne Glenn opened the game with a trey and a jumper as they Aggies (1-18, 0-8 MAC Freedom) took an early 5-2 lead. The Cougars (18-2, 8-1 MAC Freedom) got back within one but Glenn and Moretti quickly made back to back shots from outside for an 11-4 advantage with six minutes remaining in the first. Misericordia stormed back with a 16-1 run to take 20-12 lead into the second frame.
Glenn opened the second stanza with her third three-pointer of the first half, but Misericordia picked up the next five points as it opened up its first double-digit lead of the game, 25-15. Moretti carried the Aggies the rest of the half with 10 points, two treys and two layups, in a 14-8 run to bring it back to a two-possession game, 33-29, headed into the break.
In the third quarter, DelVal scored eight of the first 11 points, highlighted by a fast break layup by Moretti, to get back within one, 38-37. Glenn kept things going for the Aggies as they regained the lead for the first time since early in the first quarter with two from the charity line, 39-38. Both teams traded the lead over the next several minutes but a 9-3 Misericordia run to end the quarter put the Cougars ahead by six going into the final frame, 50-44.
After going down by eight to start the quarter,
Sarah Wills made a deep three to make it a two-possession game again with eight minutes on the clock, 52-47. Over the next four minutes, both teams traded three-point field goals, with Moretti picking up her fourth trey of the game. Misericordia outscored DelVal 10-7 the rest of the way to come away with the 65-57 victory.
Moretti finished with 18 points while Glenn had 17 and 10 rebounds as they combined for seven treys on the night.
Jordan Hyman pitched in nine points and Wills added seven with six rebounds and four steals.
The Cougars placed four players in double figures led by Erica Haefele's 14 points. Alyssa Bondi came off the bench for 12 points and eight rebounds with three steals.
