Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Washington's Milestone And Johnson's Heroics Get Aggies Back To Winning Ways

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – Junior Damian Washington reached a milestone and sophomore Terence Johnson hit two game-winning free throws with two seconds left in regulation to lift the Delaware Valley University men's basketball team to a 65-64 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory over visiting Misericordia University on Wednesday night.

The Aggies got back to their winning ways and improved to 6-13 overall and 2-7 in league play while the Cougars dropped to 7-13 and 3-6.
Washington needed just nine points to reach the 1,000 career point plateau and he got it with his fifth field goal of the night, 15:01 into regulation. It was a fast break for DelVal and Edward Jones' layup came off the rim, but Washington followed it up with a put-back layup for his 10th point of the game and 1,001st of his career. The basket also capped a 10-4 run by the Aggies and gave them a 25-21 lead.

Misericordia started the game on a 7-0 run and maintained the seven-point advantage 5:32 into the game. DelVal answered with seven straight points, including a trey from freshman Francis Robles off the bench, to tie the game at 13-13.

After Washington's milestone bucket, the Cougars finished the first half with an 11-5 run and held a 32-30 lead over the Aggies at the break.

DelVal was an efficient 12-for-26 from the field and 3-for-7 from long range through the first 20 minutes. Misericordia was held to a 9-for-28 effort from the field, but made eight free throws to the Aggies 3, and went 6-for-15 from beyond the arc.

The second half was back and forth until the Cougars used a 12-6 run that spanned 5:13 and saw five different players score. That gave the visitors their largest lead of the game, 50-42, halfway through the second half.

DelVal rallied back with a 15-7 burst to knot the score at 57-57 with 4:15 left in regulation. Washington led the charge with seven points and Jordan Tucker had four as the game headed to crunch time.

Johnson put the team on his back down the stretch with two field goals and an assist to Mike Cianciulli. Johnson's last field goal in that spurt was a put-back layup that gave the Aggies a 63-62 lead with 26 seconds left.

Down the other end, Noah Rivera got a layup inside to put Misericordia up by one with just four ticks remaining.

The Aggies rushed the ball down the court and got it to Johnson beyond the arc at the elbow. As the sophomore rose for the game-winner, he was hit on the wrist by Joseph Baldachino and sent to the free throw line for three shots with just 2.4 seconds remaining. After missing the first, Johnson calmly swished the next two to put the Aggies ahead by one, 65-64.

The Cougars heaved the inbounds down court to Rivera and the senior got off a shot from inside the paint but it clanked off the rim and DelVal celebrated the one-point MAC Freedom triumph.

Washington played 40 minutes and scored a game-high 29 points to go with 11 rebounds and two assists. He shot 11-for-20 from the field, 2-for-5 from 3-point land, and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Johnson finished with eight points including a 4-for-6 effort from the line and Cianciulli pitched in 11 points with two rebounds. Thomas Ibidapo was big defensively as he contributed five rebounds and five blocked shots, and Tucker added three blocked shots with seven points and two assists.

Misericordia was led by Rivera's 18 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Nate Kreitzer followed with 11 points, six boards, and four assists with three steals and Baldachino added 10 points off the bench.
