WILKES-BARRE (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team dropped a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom contest at Wilkes University, 60-55, in its final road game of the season.
The two teams played to seven lead changes and three ties in a back-and-forth first quarter that ended 13-13 apiece. The Aggies (0-13, 1-23) shot 6-for-10 from the field as
Lauren Moretti and
Alexa Jones each had four to pace the squad.
The Colonels (9-15,3-10) started the second stanza with an 11-3 run and kept DelVal off the board through the first 3:45 of the quarter as they built a 24-14 advantage.
The Aggies used an 8-2 run over the next 2:40 of play as they got buckets from four different players, to get back within single-digits of the home team, 28-22.
Wilkes got its advantage back to 11 moments later, but a tough running layup by
Jordan Hyman just before the horn made it a 33-24 game at the break. Hyman led the team with five points through the first 20 minutes, but DelVal was outrebounded, 24-17, and was just 1-for-9 from beyond the arc.
The two teams exchanged three-point plays over the first 3:32 of the second half as Jones and Hyman connected from deep for the Aggies, who still trailed by nine, 39-30. Wilkes led by as many as 11 in the third but four straight points from DelVal made it an eight point game, 43-36, going into the fourth.
Shayne Glenn led the Aggies on a 6-2 run to start the fourth with three straight layups and pulled the team within three, 45-42, with 7:19 left in regulation.
The Colonels countered with five straight points capped by an and-1 conversion from Brenna Babcock that made it an eight-point game again with just under five minutes to play.
With under a minute on the clock and DelVal down, 56-49, senior
Sarah Wills hit her first trey of the game to pull the Aggies within four. After a pair of free throws down the other end, Glenn connected from 3-point land and DelVal trailed by just three, 58-55, with 21 seconds left.
The Aggies fouled Gianna Roberts and she went to the line with 16 ticks on the clock. She hit both free throws and DelVal's next three-point attempt was off the mark as the home team held on for the 60-55 win.
Glenn played 39 minutes and led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds to go with two steals. Kutskel blocked a season-high eight shots and added eight points with six rebounds and two steals, while Hyman finished with 10 points and four assists. Jones was 4-for-4 from the field for nine points and four rebounds off the bench.
Roberts (18) and Alyssa Alfano (10) combined for 28 points to lead Wilkes and each hauled in five boards.
DelVal will wrap up its 2019-20 campaign on Saturday against conference front-runner DeSales at 1 p.m. A senior day ceremony will be included before the tip.
