Women's Hoops Opens MAC Freedom Play With Setback At Stevens

HOBOKEN (Nj.) – In the 2019-20 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom women's basketball opener, the Delaware Valley University Aggies traveled to Hoboken, New Jersey to take on the league's newest team, Stevens University, and came up on the short end of a 71-51 final score.

The Ducks moved to 4-8 overall while the Aggies dropped to 1-10.

The first quarter saw the two squads combine for just 18 points with the home team doubling up on DelVal, 12-6.

Both teams got the scoring touch back in the second, but it was Stevens that got out to a quicker start with a 15-6 run to begin the stanza and build its largest lead of the game to that point, 27-12, with four minutes left before the break.

The Aggies got the next four points after an offensive rebound and put-back by Emily Kutskel and a pair of free throws by Sarah Wills to cut the deficit to 11. That is the closest DelVal would get the rest of the half as Stevens held a 12-point, 34-22, lead at halftime.

Out of the break, DelVal used a 6-2 spurt over the first 4:34 of play to pull within eight, 36-28. Four different Aggies scored in the run including Alexa Jones off the bench.

The Ducks countered with a 12-5 run to close the third quarter and take a 48-33 lead going into the fourth. In the final stanza, DelVal was held scoreless over the final 4:08 and Stevens scored 22 points in the frame to secure the 70-43 victory.

The Aggies finished the game shooting 32-percent (16-for-50) from the field and made just 2-of-14 3-pointers and went 9-for-14 from the free throw line. Wills led the way with 11 points and Kutskel followed with nine as they each hauled in seven rebounds and combined for four blocked shots. Shayne Glenn and Lauren Moretti each had eight points.

Stevens shot over 40-percent from the field but only connected on 3-of-19 from behind the arc, and it was just 7-for-11 from the charity stripe. Jess Broad had 16 points and 11 rebounds with three blocked shots, Annetta Panayides recorded 15 points.

DelVal will play its first home conference game on Saturday when it welcomes in Eastern University for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
