Volleyball Triumphs Over Patriots In Home Opener

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – In the 2019 home opener, the Delaware Valley University volleyball team picked up a 3-1 victory over the University Valley Forge behind 49 total kills.

The Aggies trailed 12-9 in the first set before ripping off eight straight points behind the serves of Tara Moffa that propelled the team to a 25-21 victory in set one.

In the second set, DelVal jumped out to an 8-5 lead and eventually built its advantage to 15-10. The Patriots scored three straight points to pull within two, 15-13, but the Aggies scored 10 of the final 17 points to secure the 25-20 win and go up two games.

Valley Forge started the third set on an 8-1 run and continued on to build a lead of 13-4. The advantage grew to as many as 11 at 19-8. From there, DelVal went on a 10-3 run including seven straight points behind the serving of senior Jess Ellick to pull within three, 21-18. The Patriots staved off the threat by scoring four of the next five points to take game three, 25-19.

In the fourth set, the Aggies jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but Valley Forge staged a comeback to pull with two, 15-13. DelVal responded with a 9-1 run to take its largest lead of the set, 24-14. The Patriots scored the next two points before Caitlin Nemil set up Reilly Green for the match-winning kill, 25-16.

DelVal had 49 total kills as a team led by 12 from Krista Hiller and 11 from Green. Laura Sweger and Alexis Sideris each contributed nine kills. Nemil had herself a day with 37 assists and 23 digs to go with a service ace and just one error. Three other Aggies recorded double-digit digs in Tara Moffa (16), Jules Campbell (14), and Jess Ellick (10).

DelVal will look to make it a win-streak when it heads to Rutgers-Camden for a 7 p.m. start on Thursday.
