Football Takes Care Of Albright On The Road, 55-7

READING (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University football team scored 48 unanswered points and rolled to a 55-7 rout of Albright College, on the road, in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) bout.

The win was the 22nd consecutive conference victory for the back-to-back MAC Champions as the Aggies improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Lions dropped to 0-3 overall, but Saturday was just their first MAC game after an early bye in week two.

DelVal took the opening kickoff and drove 53 yards on five plays as John Davis found the end zone on a 12-yard jet sweep play to make it 6-0. The extra point was no good.

On Albright's second offensive play from scrimmage, junior defensive back Justin Harris undercut an out-route and took his second interception of the season 53 yards to the house to put the Aggies on top, 13-0, just five minutes into the game.

Each team punted on their next possession and the score remained 13-0 going into the second.

On the Lions first drive of the second, the DelVal defense held them to nine yards on a three-and-out, and the offense went back to work. Senior Mario Nigro broke off a 37-yard run to setup a first-and-goal, and two plays later, Anthony Fontana hit Dan Allen for a one-yard touchdown, his third of the season, to make it 20-0.

Albright managed just six yards on its next possession, while the Aggies needed just one play to go 89 yards for another touchdown. Fontana hit a streaking Aaron Nelson down the middle of the field for the senior's second touchdown catch of the year and a 27-0 lead.

The defense held the Lions to zero yards on nine plays the rest of the half while the offense tacked on two more touchdowns to give DelVal a 41-0 lead at the half. Nigro caught one of the scores on a screen pass from nine yards out, and Donte Simmons rushed in the other from one yard away.

The Aggies racked up 345 yards of offense in the first half and held Albright to just 72 yards and just two first downs.

Transfer quarterback DaQuan Bohannan took over for DelVal in the second half, but his first drive stalled after a pair of incomplete passes.

On the Lions first drive of the second, Jamir Prevard got credit for his first interception of the year, but was stripped while diving into the end zone, and Albright recovered the ball for a touchback.

After a fumble ended Bohannan's second drive, he drove the Aggies' offense 60 yards on four plays and capped it with his first touchdown pass in the Green and Gold, as he hit Tavian Dorsey from 14 yards out. It was also Dorsey's first touchdown as an Aggie and made it a 48-0 game.

In the fourth quarter, the Lions finally got on the board with their first drive. The drive started at DelVal's 29-yard line after having to punt from the back of its own end zone. Albright needed just four plays to find pay dirt as Todd Shelley hooked up with Malik Bootman from 11 yards out to make it, 48-7, with 12:30 left in regulation.

On the ensuing drive, the Aggies went 55 yards on seven plays and Wavell Wint took a handoff and went five yards to become the eighth different player to score for DelVal. The defense did its job the rest of the way for the 55-7 final.

Albright was held to 202 yards of total offense including just 86 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, the Aggies offense put up a season-high 498 yards of offense including 233 yards on the ground and another 265 through the air. Fontana completed 10-of-14 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns and Bohannan finished 3-for-8 for 81 yards and a score. Wint got a team-high nine carries in the game and went for 42 yards and a score and also caught a pass for 27 yards, while Nigro netted 89 yards on the ground and one receiving touchdown.

Nelson led the receivers with his two catches for 133 yards including the 89-yard touchdown and Simmons caught a team-best three balls out of the backfield that went for 17 yards. Dorsey finished with two catches for 54 yards, as eight different players recorded a catch.

Defensively, 25 different players made a tackle and the unit forced four turnovers with interceptions by Harris, Rashiek Harvard, Prevard, and Anthony Thomas. Thomas nearly scored on his pick, but was tackled inside the 10-yard line after a 67-yard return. Michael Nobile added to his nation-best total of tackles for loss with 2.5 in this game, including half a sack, and he led the team with eight tackles. Trent Fries followed with six tackles and Billy Walsh recorded four.

On special teams, Barksdale returned six punts for 97 yards and Prevard took one kickoff return 38 yards.

Shelley was just 9-for-24 for 101 yards passing with three interceptions and Jimmy Lahay completed just 2-of-9 passes for 15 yards and a pick. Will Dogba carried the ball 10 times but was held to 39 yards while Tony Thorpe accumulated just 24 yards on his 11 carries. Defensively, Kyle Komanitsky and Sam Viera each notched nine tackles and one tackle for loss.
