GWYNEDD VALLEY (Pa.) -- The Delaware Valley University volleyball team took to the court for the second day in a row, but was bested by host Gwynedd Mercy University in three sets on Tuesday night. Set scores were 25-19, 25-5, and 25-18.
The Griffins moved to one game above .500 at 4-3 overall while the Aggies dropped to 2-5.
Gwynedd Mercy got out to an 11-5 lead in the first set, but DelVal rallied back with a 6-1 run to pull with one of the tie. The Griffins scored the next seven points to extend its lead to 19-12 and eventually led 21-13 before the Aggies made another late surge. With
Reilly Green serving, DelVal ripped off six staright points to make it a 21-19 contest and force Gwynedd to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Griffins executed four straight points to earn the win.
The second set was all Griffins as they held leads of 9-0 and 14-1 before cruising to the 2-0 lead in the match. In the final set, Gwynedd converted a match-high 13 kills and got out to an early 3-0 lead. The Aggies hung tough and tied the game at 10-10 before the Griffins scored four straight to make it a four-point game. Battling until the end, the Aggies were still alive and trailed by just one late in the match, 19-18, after a kill by
Laura Sweger. From there, Gwynedd scored the final six points to claim the match victory.
Sweger led DelVal with six kills and was one of four players with a partial block.
Caitlin Nemil recorded 18 assists and 11 digs and
Krista Hiller followed with 10 digs to go with two kills and an ace.
