DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team got back to its winning ways with a 14-10 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom triumph over visiting King's College on Sunday.
King's (10-13, 7-5 MAC Freedom) got the scoring started in the top off the first with an RBI double to right field from Matt Mellinger that plated Christian Pack to make it, 1-0.
DelVal (7-17 overall, 3-9 MAC Freedom) responded in the bottom of the inning as
Cody Brown sent a ball to the fence in left center for a double and two RBIs as
Ryan Schuetrumpf and
Troy Lachenmayer came in to score to give the Aggies the lead.
The Monarchs regained the lead in the second with a long two-run home run to center field by Mike Armstrong.
In the bottom of the second, the Aggies got their first three batters aboard on walks and
Timmy Lallis made King's pay with a single through the right side to plate two and make it 4-3.
King's answered again in the next half inning with one run on three hits including an RBI single up the middle by Tyler Reynolds that knotted the game at 4-4.
DelVal's bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth to the tune of five runs off of six hits and one error. Lallis plated his third run of the game with a single and
Tom Crooks followed with his first home run of the year, a two-run shot to right field. Two batters later, Scuetrumpf laced a triple to the warning track in left field for an RBI and
Cody Brown hit a single to center to drive him in and make it, 9-4.
The Monarchs loaded the bases with three walks to start the sixth and Pack drove in two with a single to make it, 9-6.
James Eldridge came in to relieve starting pitcher
Hunter Mease and got out of the jam.
The Aggies got one run of the runs back in the bottom of the frame as
Neal Flogel hit a triple to the fence in left center and
Josh Adamski drove him in with an RBI single.
In the top of the seventh, King's pulled to within one run of DelVal with a bases loaded triple just out of the reach of the diving center fielder to make it a 10-9 game.
Schuetrumpf came up big again in the bottom of the seventh with another drive to the fence in left field as he legged out a triple and drove in Lachenmayer put the Aggies up, 11-9. DelVal got three more insurance runs in the eighth and held the Monarchs to run one in the ninth to secure the 14-10 nine-inning triumph.
Lallis had four hits in the game with four runs batted in and a run scored and Schuetrumpf finished with three hits, three RBIs, and two runs scored. All nine of the Aggies starters got a hit in the game with six players recording multiple base knocks. Brown and Crooks also finished with three RBIs and Lachenmayer scored three times.
Mease earned the win with five innings pitched and six runs allowed and
James Eldridge pitched the final four frames with four hits allowed, three walks, and three hit batters.
King's was led by Pack's 3-for-6 effort and five runs driven in and Reynolds was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Five different pitchers saw action including Lupas who suffered the loss with five runs allowed on eight hits in 2.2 innings.
