DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University softball team earned two walk-off victories over visiting Penn State Harrisburg in non-conference action. The Aggies won game one, 5-4, in the bottom of the seventh and took the nightcap, 2-1, in the bottom of the eighth.
After a scoreless first inning, Penn State Harrisburg scored three unearned runs on three hits, an error, and a walk.
DelVal got one back in the in the bottom of the third as
Maddy O'Donohue reached on an error,
Jamie Stefani moved her to third with a double, and
Faith Sleva picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
The Aggies took the lead in the fourth on four hits and two errors. Three freshman led off the frame with hits including a double by
Olivia Monismith.
Jess Ellick reached on an error to plate one run and O'Donohue sent a double to the fence in left field that plated two more and gave the home team its first lead of the day, 4-3.
In the top of the fifth, the Nittany Lions tied the game, 4-4, on an RBI sing by Carlee Gochenaur.
The game remained tied at four going into the bottom of the seventh where the Aggies executed perfect small ball.
Adina Brucie worked a lead-off walk, and stole second, and O'Donohue advanced her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Stefani came up next and drove in Brucie with a shot to shortstop that allowed Brucie to beat the throw home for the 5-4 final.
In the second game, after Penn State Harrisburg scored one in the top of the first, the trio at the top of the DelVal lineup struck again. Brucie got aboard with a single and O'Donohue moved her up to her second. After Brucie stole third, Stefani drove her home with a single through the right side to tie the game, 1-1.
The game remained scoreless the rest of the way until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Aggies put it away. Under the new international tie-breaker rule, Stefani was placed at second base to start the eighth for DelVal. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and came in to score when
Caitlin Stoner hit a ball back to the pitcher that was misplayed to give DelVal its second walk-off victory of the day, 2-1.
O'Donohue was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored in the first game,
Gabrielle Landis went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the opener, and Brucie went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the second. Stefani had two hits, two RBI, and a run scored in the two games combined. In the circle, Stefani went the distance in both games and earned two wins. She combined to allow one earned run with nine strikeouts, five walks, and 13 hits surrendered.
Four players had multi-hit games including Gochenaur who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Allison Hartman pitched game one and struck out nine batters with one earned run allowed and seven hits, and Mary-Kate Penczkowski struck out two with three walks and six hits allowed, and one earned run against.
DelVal will wrap-up the 2019 campaign on Saturday with a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom doubleheader at home against Misericordia. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
