DOYLESTOWN (PA) – On a chilly Tuesday afternoon, the Delaware Valley University baseball team scored six runs in the seventh inning to move past the visiting City College of New York, 13-5, in a non-conference game.
The Aggies improved their record to 6-8 overall while the Beavers dropped to 4-7.
Alex Velazquez got CCNY on the board in the top of the first after he was hit by a pitch that scored Cooper York. Josh Moreno was then walked and Stephen Peters advanced home to put DelVal down, 2-0. After a scoreless bottom half of the inning for the Aggies, Michael Espinal hit an RBI double down the right field line, and Peters crossed the plate again for the Beavers.
The Aggies responded with two runs in their half of the second inning.
Josh Adamski got DelVal on the board after advancing from second to third on a wild pitch, and he advanced home on a second wild pitch.
Neal Flogel advanced two bases after
Timmy Lallis grounded out to second base to decrease the deficit to just one run, 3-2.
The Aggies knotted the game at three apiece in the bottom of the third as
Joey Lodato grounded out to first base and
Cody Brown plated his sixth run of the season. Adamski gave DelVal its first lead of the game with his second run of the day, advancing from third to home on a wild pitch.
The score remained 4-3 until Ethan Angress drove in a run in the seventh but the Aggies quickly got it back in the bottom of the frame as Adamski scored his third run of the game on a double to left field by Flogel and started what would become a streak of unearned runs. Flogel, Lodato,
Tom Crooks, Lallis, and
Troy Lachenmayer also plated unearned runs for the Aggies and DelVal finished the inning with six runs on just one hit and three errors.
The Beavers got one more in the eighth as Velazquez placed an RBI single perfectly down the left field line bringing home Peters. The Aggies picked up three additional runs in the bottom of the eighth to keep the score out-of-reach. The eighth was highlighted by a single hit to left field by Crooks and Flogel scored his third of the game for the 13-5 final.
Adamski finished the game 2-for-6 with one RBI, three runs scored, one walk, one steal, and one hit by pitch. Flogel went 1-for-3 at the dish and finished the game with one RBI, three runs, two walks, and three stolen bases. As a team, the Aggies registered eight hits and 10 walks with 13 left on base.
Joe McGlade got the start on the mound and went three plus innings with two strikeouts.
James Eldridge picked up the win throwing over four innings while allowing just two runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Freshman Zack Goodell earned his first career save pitching one inning in relief.
CCNY was led by a 2-for-4 effort with two runs scored from Stephen Peters. Trent Alfred dropped to 0-3 as he pitched over three innings on the mound for the Beavers with one strikeout.
DelVal will take the field again this Friday, March 29 when they travel to Manhattanville College for its first of a three-game Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom series at 3:30 p.m.
