FLEMINGTON (Nj.) -- In its first games of the season versus a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom opponent, the Delaware Valley University baseball team split a doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson University - Florham.
The Aggies (4-7, MAC Freedom 1-1) defeated the Devils (5-6, MAC Freedom 1-1) in the first game, 6-2, but dropped the back half of the nightcap by a final score of 23-3.
The opener saw DelVal jump out to an early lead, as it scored three times in its first at-bats. Junior
Ryan Schuetrumpf lined out to left field which brought Sophomore
Timmy Lallis home for the first run of the
game. Lallis was walked, advanced to second as a batter was hit by a pitch, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Luke Hendricks advanced from third to home for the Aggies on a single by transfer,
Cody Brown. Brown's hit was the first of the game for the Aggies. Zack Zgura also scored after FDU-Florham pitcher Brad Norris threw his second wild pitch of the inning.
The Devils cut the deficit down to one, with two runs in the third. Sophomore Joe Moskowitz led off with a walk and came around to score on a long double to left-center by Michael Dell'Unto. Dell'Unto moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Jake Alercio before touching home on an RBI double from Nate Peacock.
DelVal scored again without a hit in the fourth, but worked two walks and a got an RBI groundout, as
Joey Lodato advanced home. Lodato also scored again for the Aggies in the sixth after Lallis tripled to center field. Lallis picked up what would become the final run of the game for DelVal on an error by FDU-Florham's third baseman.
Senior
Hunter Mease had another strong performance for the Aggies as he played just shy of a complete-game and allowed only two runs on seven hits, with four strike outs and two walks. With the bases loaded,
Troy Lachenmayer came in to close out the game as he struck out the Devils Matt Nodoro to preserve the win. Brad Norris dropped to 0-2 for the Devils.
In the second contest, FDU-Florham capitalized on nine errors in the field by DelVal. The Devils plated at least four runs in four different innings.
After a scoreless first inning for the Aggies, the Devils scored four times in the bottom half, all coming with two outs.
With the bases loaded, Tyler McCulloch hit a ground ball to second which looked to be the third out, but Nate Peacock scored on an error. Another error also allowed the final two runs of the inning for FDU-Florham.
The Aggies got a run back in the second as
Josh Adamski's single brought Flogel home, however, Devils put the game out of reach with 13 runs over the next two innings, highlighted by two homeruns. McCulloch and Michael Tufano both hit their first career homers.
The Aggies, unable to pull off the comeback, were outscored 6-2 over the final two and a half innings of play to end the game at 23-3.
Kevin Brown earned his second win of the season for FDU, tossing six frames while striking out five.
Cody Brown was given the loss,
Tyler Bruseloff and
Mike Koslin also pitched several innings for the Aggies in the loss.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow, this time in Doylestown, Pa. to close the three-game series. Tomorrow will be DelVal's first home game of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
