OSCEOLA (Fl.) – The Delaware Valley University softball team won its second game in a row in triumphant fashion as it needed just five innings to get passed the University of Wisconsin – Superior, , in its fifth game of spring break.
The Aggies improved to 2-3 overall while the Yellow Jackets fell to 2-4.
Wisconsin – Superior got a runner aboard in the top of the first, but the DelVal defense buckled down by retiring the next three batters.
Jamie Stefani got a strikeout and catcher
Maddy O'Donohue made a diving catch in foul territory to send the Aggies to the plate.
The offense continued its torrid pace from last game with a five-run first inning on four hits. After loading the bases,
Caitlyn Pollock worked a walk to score the first run, and
Julie Burns followed with a double to the fence in left field to score
Olivia Monismith and Caitlyn Stoner. The next batter was rookie
Faith Sleva who drove a ball to the left field corner, passed the outstretched dive of the fielder, for a triple and two RBIs to make it 5-0 going into the second. DelVal did all of its damage with two outs.
Needing a shutdown inning, the Aggies allowed the Yellow Jackets to load the bases, but Stefani locked in and punched out the next three batters in order to get out of the jam.
Wisconsin-Superior got on the board in the third inning thanks to a two-RBI double from Davriana Horvath that plated Brianna McGrath and Gabby Gidley.
Monismith drove in a run in the fourth for DelVal and Stefani helped herself with a two-run bomb to straight-away center, her first homerun of the year and the eighth of her career. That made it an 8-2 game for the Aggies.
Stefani gave up one unearned run in the seventh, but picked up her 10
th strikeout for the final out of the game to secure the 8-3 victory.
At the dish, Stefani was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Burns was 2-for-2 with a walk, a run scored, and two runs driven in. Burns is now batting .692 on the year with nine hits, three doubles, and eight RBIs. Caitlyn Stoner also had a multi-hit game with two hits and a run scored.
Leadoff hitter Tiffany Kirk led the Yellowjackets with three hits and Horvath and Amanda Kishish each had two hits.
