Women's Hoops Gets Hot In Wilkes-Barre, Downs King's 77-62

WILKES-BARRE (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team rode a hot-shooting first half to a 77-62 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory on the road at King's College on Wednesday night.

The Aggies (9-13, 3-8 MAC Freedom) connected on 4-of-6 treys in the early going and held a 16-9 first quarter lead. The advantage grew to as many as 10 in the opening stanza and they went into the second up, 20-12.

DelVal used a 17-5 run, fueled by eight points from Ashley Smink, to take its largest lead of the game, 40-25, with less than two minutes remaining before halftime. Four different players scored during that spurt.
The Aggies were hot all half as they shot over 50-percent (16-for-30) from the field and went 9-for-13 from beyond the arc to take a 46-29 advantage into the break.

The defense held the Monarchs (12-10, 6-5 MAC Freedom) to 12-of-34 shooting from the field and they were 0-for-7 from deep through twenty minutes.

King's outscored DelVal, 13-8, in the third quarter, but neither team shot well from the field. The Monarchs made just 4-of-13 field goals while the Aggies went 2-for-14, but maintained a 54-42 advantage going into the fourth and final quarter.

King's got a 3-pointer from Mackenzie Yori and Alexis Steeber made a pair of free throws to start the fourth, and the DelVal lead was down to seven.

Minutes later the Aggies got three stops and three layups to build their lead back to double-digits, 62-49, with 5:36 left in regulation.

The Monarchs charged back with four-straight points from reigning MAC Freedom player of the week, Rebecca Prociak, to get back to within nine.

The squads traded layups and treys on the next two possessions, and Samantha Rajza hit 1-of-2 free throw to make it a 67-59 game with under three minutes to play.

The rest of the way, the Aggies made 8-of-10 shots from the charity stripe to close the game on a 10-3 run and earn the 77-62 conference triumph.

DelVal finished the game shooting over 44-percent from the field, over 47-percent from deep, and over 84-percent from the free-throw line and held a 40-39 advantage on the glass.
