DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team celebrated its seniors before the game and defeated Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Wilkes University at home, 83-71, to keep its win-streak and playoff hopes alive.
Tonight was the final home regular season game for DelVal and its three seniors,
Amber Grohowski,
Monika Smallwood and
Danielle Skedzielewski. The trio has combined to play over 250 games for the Aggies and Skedzielewski etched her spot among the all-time Aggie women's basketball players as she is in the top-20 in many different categories.
With their third consecutive win by a final score of 83-71, DelVal is now in full control of their playoff destiny. They will play at number-one seed DeSales on Saturday and, with a win, they will secure a spot in the MAC Freedom playoffs.
Early in the first quarter tonight, the Colonels (8-16, 4-9 MAC Freedom) led 2-0 after a jump shot from Gianna Roberts. Thirteen seconds later, the Aggies (11-13, 5-8 MAC Freedom) responded with a game-high 14-0 run to take a 12 point lead.
Roberts jump shot was the only field for the Colonels as the Aggies took a commanding 14-5 advantage into the second quarter.
In the second frame, the two sides traded baskets before the Aggies went on a 10-2 run to close out the half with a 41-24 lead. Junior
Ashley Smink led the way for DelVal as she connected on four treys for a total of 13 points and one steal.
Senior Daniele Skedzielewski opened the scoring in the second half with a jump shot from outside of the paint.
The Colonels went on their best scoring run of the game with seven straight point's mid-way through the quarter, but DelVal closed out the frame with a 62-53 lead.
In the final quarter, the two teams traded several baskets before the Aggies crushed any hopes of a comeback for the Colonels with an 8-0 run to finish the game and secure the 87-71 win.
Smink led all scorers in the game with 21 points on 4-of-8 shooting from deep and Skedzieleewski followed with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds to go with two blocks and two assists.
Lauren Moretti and
Sarah Wills scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, and each dropped in four treys. Moretti added three steals and Wills grabbed three boards. Grohowski finished with four points and four rebounds.
Senior
Amber Grohowski picked up four points in what could be the last home game of the season fpr the Aggies.
Lauren Moretti and
Sarah Wills each scored double-digits in points with 14 and 13, respectively. Wills's 13 points were the second highest she has scored this season.
Dom Moser nearly recorded her second consecutive double-double but finished just shy with 9 points and 8 assists.
Alyssa Alfano led Wilkes with 20 points, one rebound, one steal and one assist and Gab Giordano followed with 17 points and nine rebounds.
