CENTER VALLEY (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team had its 2018-19 campaign come to an end on Saturday afternoon after an 80-53 setback at nationally ranked Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom rival DeSales University.
The Aggies finished the season strong with three wins in their final four games to keep their playoff hopes alive until the final buzzer. They finish with an 11-14 record overall and 5-9 mark in league play.
The Bulldogs came into today's game ranked 12
th in one national poll and 16
th in another, and were selected as the top-seed in the latest Division III women's basketball Atlantic Region poll. They finished the regular season with 18 straight wins, including a perfect 14-0 mark in MAC Freedom games, and 23-2 overall.
DeSales will host the fourth seeded King's Collage Monarchs on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the conference postseason tournament. The other game will feature #2 Wilkes hosting #3 Manhattanville.
DelVal scored the first basket of the game in this one, but would not be able to regain the lead the rest of the day. The Bulldogs went on a 12-2 run over the next 3:44of play and held a 19-12 advantage going into the second.
The Aggies got to within six after
Ashley Smink found
Lauren Moretti open for three to make it 24-18 with 5:37 left before the break. DeSales outscored the Aggies 14-6 the rest of the way to take a 38-24 lead into the locker room.
DelVal scored six straight points in the third led by a pair of inside baskets by
Danielle Skedzielewski to cut its deficit to thirteen before the Bulldogs went on a 15-0 spurt to close the third and take a 63-35 lead into the fourth.
The Aggies outscored DeSales 18-17 in the final frame, but the season came to a conclusion with the 80-53 final.
Moretti paced DelVal with 20 points on 4-of-6 shooting from deep. She added four rebounds and two steals.
Dom Moser, Skedzielewski, and Smink each finished with 10 points and Moser added five steals, four rebounds, and four steals. Skedzielewski led the team with eight boards and dished out three assists and Smink pitched in a pair of steal.
Amber Grohowski scored three points and had six rebounds, but the Aggies got no scoring off their bench in this game.
For the Bulldogs, 10 different players got on the scoresheet led by Samatha Shinkus' 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point land. Averi Jordan had a team-high nine rebounds to go with 12 points and Morgan Birmelin finished with 13 points, nine assists, five rebounds, and three steals.
