ABINGTON (Pa.) -- The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team was outscored 42-31 in the second half at Penn State Abington and dropped a 72-64 non-conference decision on the road Wednesday night.
The Aggies fell to 1-6 overall while the Lions improved to 2-3.
The game was knotted at 7-7 in the early going before DelVal went on a 7-0 run capped by a 3-pointer from
Lauren Moretti with 1:34 left in the first quarter. The Aggies maintained a 16-11 advantage going into the second.
DelVal used a 10-4 run to start the stanza and grow its lead to 11, 26-15.
Jordan Hyman and
Shayne Glenn each connected from beyond-the-arc to highlight the spurt. Penn State responded with a 16-7 run over the final 6:27 of the half to cut its deficit to just three, 33-30, at the break.
Iman Richmond connected on a trey to pull Penn State even at 41-41 halfway through the third quarter, but DelVal scored the next four points to maintain the advantage. With just over a minute left in the stanza the Lions got their first lead since early in the first quarter when Sydney Barrow hit a jumper to make it 46-45. Nakiyah Green converted one-of-two free throws to make it a two-point Penn State lead going into the fourth.
The Lions got the first six points to start the fourth to extend their lead to eight, 53-45. Moretti countered with a three, but the home team went on a 15-5 run over the next five minutes play to take the largest lead of the game, 70-58 with just one minute to play and it held on for the 72-64 final.Â
Glenn led all players in the game with 21 points and added six rebounds and two assists. Moretti and
Camryn Shaw also reached double figures with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Shaw added a team-high nine boards and was 4-for-8 from the field with two steals. As a team, DelVal shot 19-for-60 (31.7%) from the field and 9-for-22 (40.9%) from deep.Â
Abington was led by 12 points apiece from Barrow and Laquana Nagbe and Lacy MacLachlin followed with 11. The Penn State bench outscored DelVal's, 28-2, and held a 42-27 advantage on the boards.Â
The Aggies will be back in action at home next Wednesday against Penn State Berks before heading to Miami for their winter break trip at the D3 Holiday Shootout.Â
