Football Triumphs Over King's On Homecoming Day

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University football team earned its 24th consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory, and its fourth straight game of the season, with a 28-13 triumph over visiting King's College on homecoming day in Doylestown.

The Aggies came into today's game ranked 13th in the nation, and with the win, improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in MAC play. The Monarchs dropped to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in league games.

DelVal won the opening coin toss and differed to King's. On the Monarch's third play from scrimmage, Tyler Moore's pass was deflected and then picked off by Blaine Netterman to set the offense up inside King's territory.

John Davis carried the ball on the first play from scrimmage and took it 26 yards up the middle to the Monarchs 12-yard line. Three plays later Fontana hooked up with Dan Allen in the corner of the end zone for the 7-0 lead.

The Monarchs answered on their next possession with a 15-play, 75 yard drive that spanned 9:21 and culminated with a touchdown pass to the corner of the end zone from Moore to Gabe Boccella. Moore dropped the pass perfectly over a defender and into the arms of his leading receiver to tie the game, 7-7.

DelVal fumbled the ensuing kickoff, but held King's to a 25-yard field goal attempt that missed wide left and the game remained deadlocked going into the second quarter.

Neither team scored on its next three possessions. The Aggies had a chance to increase its lead with a 24-yard field goal, but Nick Restaino's attempt missed left.

Late in the first half, Tahmir Barksdale setup the offense at the King's 41 with a 19-yard punt return and 1:26 left before the break. DelVal worked the ball inside the red zone and on fourth-and-goal from the one yard line, Fontana rolled to his left and connected with Aaron Nelson in the back of the end zone to put the Aggies up 14-7 at halftime.

The Monarchs were held to -9 yards rushing in the first half while Fontana completed 12-of-13 passes for 88 yards and two scores.

DelVal got the ball to start the second half and again had good field position as its drive began at the King's 47. The Aggies covered the 47 yards on 10 plays and Donte Simmons burst in for the score with an eight-yard run as he bounced off tackles and dove for the pylon to make it, 21-7.

On King's ensuing drive, it faced a long 2nd-and-16 and Moore threw a pass right to Netterman who got his second interception of the game and returned it 14 yards to the Monarchs' 29.

With another short field to work with, DelVal needed just five plays including a one-yard touchdown run by Nigro to increase its lead to 28-7 with 5:02 left in the third. The score remained that way going into the fourth quarter and King's had just 10 rushing yards on the board.

After the Aggies went three-and-out, King's drive started at its own 28-yard line. On the first play, it gained 58 yards thanks to a 28-yard catch and run by Jordan Downes and two personal foul penalties against DelVal. On the next play, the Aggies were flagged for pass interference in the end zone and that set up a two yard touchdown pass from Moore to Brandon Cohen to make it a 28-13 game with 12 minutes left in regulation.

DelVal held King's to just 23 yards off offense the rest of the way to secure the 15-point victory

For the game, the defense held the Monarchs to 196 yards and just six rushing yards while forcing two turnovers on Netterman's interceptions. Netterman added four tackles while Kenyonn Jones led the team with 5.5 including a sack. As a unit, they got to the quarterback for four sacks.

Fontana finished the day 21-for-27 passing with 146 yards and two touchdowns. Simmons led the ground attack with 64 yards on 12 carries and a score. Nelson hauled in a team-high five passes for 37 yards and seven other players caught at least one pass.

Downes finished with 39 net yards on the ground and seven receptions for 71 yards for King's while Moore was 21-for-40 through the air with 190 yards, two interceptions, and two touchdowns. Charles McCall led all players in the game with nine tackles, including eight solo, and two tackles for loss.

DelVal will take to the road next week as it heads to Wilkes University for a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Colonels.
