24 Hours Out: Previewing #13 DelVal Football Vs. King's

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University football team will welcome in the visiting King's College Monarchs for homecoming while in search of its fourth straight win of the season, and its 24th consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference victory, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Robert A. Lipinski Field in Doylestown.

The Aggies are 4-1 on the year, and 3-0 in league play, and ranked 13th in both the D3Football.com and American Football Coaches Association national polls after last week's convincing, 41-7, triumph at MAC foe Lycoming College. DelVal's lone setback on the schedule came at home in a, 24-18, four-overtime loss to Wesley College in week two. The Wolverines sit at 12th in the D3Football.com poll and eighth in the AFCA rankings.

The Aggies have faced the Monarchs football team 33 times since 1949 and own a 22-11 record, including a 10-1 mark over the last decade. Last year in Wilkes-Barre, DelVal earned its first of two consecutive shutouts that year as it blanked King's 49-0. The Aggies scored four touchdowns in the first half and another three in the second, including a pair of defensive touchdowns.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES
DelVal owns the top-ranked defense in the MAC and ranks among the best in the country. In the division III rankings they are 25th in points allowed (13.2 ppg), sixth in total defense (206.2 avg. yds/gm.), 12th in rush defense (55.6 avg. yds/gm.), and 23rd in passing defense (150.6 avg. yds/gm.).

In last week's win at Lycoming, the unit allowed just 121 yards of total offense, including just 39 yards on the ground and forced three turnovers in the game, including a strip-sack returned for a touchdown. Senior linebacker Billy Walsh (Brick, Nj./Brick Memorial) finished with six tackles, 2.5 for loss, one sack, and one interception en route to earning MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Sophomore defensive end Michael Nobile (Brick, Nj./Brick Memorial) recorded a sack and tackle for loss to up his Division-III leading total of TFL to 14.5. He leads the team this season with 33 tackles and five sacks.

Nobile is joined on the front line by nose guard Kenyonn Jones (Burlington, Nj./Glassboro) who ranks second on the team with 32 tackles including 2.5 sacks. Yusuf Aladinov (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./William Tennent) rounds out the d-line and he scored his first touchdown as an Aggie as he scooped a fumble forced by senior linebacker Vincent DiLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and took it in for the score.

The defense has forced nine interceptions this season, led by two apiece from junior cornerback Justin Harris (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) and senior defensive back Rashiek Harvard (Edison, Nj./John P. Stevens).

Offensively, DelVal averages a league-best 34.5 points per game with 402.6 yards of total offense. The balanced attack is putting up 236.4 yards per game through the air and another 166.2 yards on the ground, but they have turned the ball over 10 times with four interceptions and six lost fumbles.

Five different players scored in Saturday's win over Lycoming and senior quarterback Anthony Fontana (Brick, Nj./Brick Memorial) completed 13-of-24 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns while running for another score. On the year, he has completed 56.9-percent (62-of-109) of his passes for 1,013 yards and 10 touchdowns, to go with 188 yards rushing and four scores.

Returning All-American tight-end Dan Allen (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Wood) scored his first-career rushing touchdown on Saturday and has found the end zone four times this season. He leads the team with 16 receptions for 275 yards. Senior Aaron Nelson (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) follows with 11 catches for 285 yards and two touchdowns and Juwan Manigo (Windsor Mill, Md./Perry Hall) has hauled in eight passes for 218 yards and two scores.

Three running backs have split primary duties out of the backfield with Mario Nigro (South River, Nj./South River) averaging 4.9 yards per carry with four touchdowns and Donte Simmons (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) is going for 4.5 yards per attempt with one score.

On special teams, freshman Tahmir Barksdale (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) is averaging 15.29 yards per punt return with one return for a touchdown. Jamir Prevard (Galloway, Nj./Atlantic City) has returned seven kick-offs for 201 yards (28.7 avg. per return).

Senior kicker Nick Restaino (Bloomfield, Nj./Bloomfield) became the program's all-time leader in extra points made on Saturday and has converted 147 for his career.

SCOUTING THE MONARCHS
King's suffered its first loss of the season last week in a 22-16 setback at MAC rival Misericordia last Saturday to fall to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in league play. In week two, the Monarchs triumphed over Lycoming College at home, 19-13.

The offense is averaging 390.8 yards per game, including 147.5 on the ground and 243.3 yards per game through the air. It has thrown five interceptions and lost one fumble while surrendering just five sacks through four games.

Senior tailback Jordan Downes leads the conference with an impressive 153.5 rushing yards per game to go with four touchdowns. A dual threat, he has caught 16 passes for an average of 37.5 yards per game and one score.

Sophomore quarterback Tyler Moore has completed 91-of-136 (66.9%) of his passes for 973 yards and seven touchdowns with three interceptions. He is not a threat to run the ball as his longest rush has gone for just six yards this season.

Junior wideout Gabe Boccella leads the squad with 27 receptions for 418 yards and three touchdowns while halfback Brandon Cohen is second with 21 catches for 153 yards and one score.

The defense is second in the MAC with 293 yards allowed per game and tied third in scoring defense with 18.5 points permitted. They have forced 10 turnovers through four games with six interceptions and four fumbles recovered.
