MADISON (Nj.) – The Delaware Valley University men's basketball team shot 52.5-percent from the field as a team and got back to its winning ways with an 84-76 road victory over Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe FDU-Florham.
The Aggies upped their record to 7-9 overall and 3-2 in MAC Freedom games while the Devils slid to 4-12 and 1-4.
After
Alex Matsinye hit a short jumper from the elbow to start the game, FDU-Florham went on an 11-2 run to take an early seven-point lead.
The Aggies scored the next six points to pull within one, 11-10, but did not regain the lead until
Damian Washington hit a 3-pointer to make it 24-23 with 7:13 left in the stanza.
Oliver Ortman responded for the Devils with five consecutive points, but
Mike Cianciulli scored five straight for DelVal to retain the one-point advantage.
The score was knotted three times before the waning seconds of the half when Kenneth LaRoca hit his third trey of the game as FDU-Florham took a 41-39 lead into the break.
The Devils shot 59.3-percent from the field and 60-percent from 3-point land compared to 48.4-percent from the field and 26.7-percent from behind the arc for the Aggies. Cianciulli and Washington each had 12 points in the half to lead DelVal.
FDU-Florham led 58-53 in the second half before senior
Dom Stiefel came off the bench and hit consecutive treys to give the Aggies a 61-58 advantage with 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
DelVal saw its lead trimmed to one after Anthony Mitchell converted an and-1 play to make it 72-71, but Stiefel connected on another 3-ball and Terrence Johnson added a trey of his own to make it 78-71 with just 74 ticks on the clock.
The Aggies hit 6-of-7 free throws down the stretch to snap its losing streak and earn the 84-76 MAC Freedom victory.
Stiefel finished with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc in just 10 minutes of play. Cianciulli connected on three treys and totaled 15 points while Washington led the squad with 19 points to go with nine rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a blocked shot. Robinson followed with 13 points and
Andre' Butler grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and dished out five assists. Johnson and
Damani Myers each went 3-for-4 from the field and finished with seven and eight points, respectively. DelVal out rebounded FDU-Florham, 38-26, in the game.
LaRocca hit 5-of-9 treys to finish with 19 points, but Mitchell led all scorers in the game with 22 points to go with five boards. Andy Fleurantin finished with 10 points and Darren Davy had nine points and five assists.
The Aggies return home for another league contest against King's College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
