Aggies Offense Explodes In Season Finale To Earn A Doubleheader Split

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team had an offensive explosion in the final game of the season to salvage a non-conference, doubleheader split with visiting College of New Rochelle. The Blue Angels won game one 4-3 and the Aggies took game two, 13-1.

In the third inning of the opener, New Rochelle (10-27) got a 1-0 lead with back-to-back singles by Chris Suarez and Juan Diaz.

DelVal (10-19) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a successful suicide squeeze bunt by Trevor Musselman that scored Luke Hedricks who was aboard with a single.

The Blue Angels got the run right back in the next half inning as Suarez hit a triple to deep right field and scored on a single by Jared Edwards to make it 2-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, DelVal got its first two runners aboard with walks and Jeremy Stewart drove one in with a single through the left side to make it 4-2.

The Aggies still trailed by two in the bottom of the seventh and got their first two runners aboard with walks. After a double steal, Luke Hendricks hit a sacrifice fly to left field to make it a 4-3 game with a runner on second and one out. However, the next batter would foul out to the third baseman and the final out was recorded on a pop-up to second base to end the game, 4-3.

In game two, the two teams combined for just three hits through two and a half innings until DelVal got things going in the bottom of the third with a pair of singles to start the frame. Kevin Crill then legged out a double to center field that made it a 2-0 game heading into the fourth.

The Aggies blew the game open in the fourth with six earned runs on five hits. Trevor Musselman started the rally with a lead-off triple and two batters later, Stewart knocked him in to make it a 3-0 game. Two batters later, Stewart came around to score on an RBI single by Timmy Lallis. Crill then came up with his second double in as many innings and his third RBI to put the Aggies up by five. Later in the frame, Hendricks hit an opposite field homerun, his fourth of the season, and DelVal held an 8-0 lead after four.

After the Blue Angels got one run on two hits in the sixth, the Aggies offense went back to work and put up five more runs on four hits and two errors. Tom Crooks hit an RBI triple, James Eldridge had an RBI double and Ryan Schuetrumpf drove in two with a triple to right-center. Zakary Zgura also pitched in an RBI single as DelVal put a bow on the 2018 season with the 13-1 victory.

Starting pitcher Ben Lippincott earned the win after going seven innings and allowing just four hits and one earned run with four punch outs. Crill led the offense with a pair of hits, three RBIs and two runs scored and 11 other players had base knocks.

Crooks' triple gave him five for the season and tied him for fifth on the single-season list with three other former Aggies. Stewart went a combined 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored on the day.

For New Rochelle, Edgardo Figueroa had two hits in the nightcap and Albert Rodriguez and Chris Suarez had two in the opener with Suarez also scoring twice. Gonzalez earned the win after going six innings and giving up five hits and three earned runs.
