PURCHASE (NY) – Delaware Valley University freshman
Sean McFadden hurled a two-hit, complete game shutout, in just his second start of the season, to secure the Aggies a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom split at Manhattanville College. DelVal won game two 5-0 after dropping the first, 6-1.
The Aggies gave McFadden an early lead to work with thanks to a two-out rally in the second. Senior
Kevin Crill started things with a triple down the right field line and
Joey Lodato drove him in with a single. After swiping second base,
Jeremy Stewart drove Lodato in with a base hit to center to make it 2-0.
After giving up a double to Luke Scoggins with one out in the bottom of the third, McFadden allowed no hits and just one base runner the rest of the way.
DelVal secured the 5-0 shutout win with two runs on three hits in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded,
Tom Crooks hit an RBI single and
Sammy Amos drove one in with a sacrifice fly.
In the opener, it was Manhattnville's starting pitcher that was throwing a gem to earn the team a win. William Tempone threw 5.2 innings allowing just one hit, and striking out three, with four walks and Justin Proteau picked up his third save with no hits allowed and two punch-outs.
The Valiants scored three runs in the first inning and held a 5-0 lead after four innings. Peter Iannarilli had a double and two RBIs while Luke Schaffer had three hits and two RBIs, and Scoggins finished with a pair of runs to go with his three hits. Nick Campana went 2-for-2 with a runs scored.
The Aggies offense came in the sixth inning when Crill and
Ben Lippincott worked two out walks and
Timmy Lallis hit a single to right field to plate Lippincott. Calvin Endy started the game on the mound and went 4.1 innings allowing 10 hits and five earned runs.
With the split, the Valiants finished conference play 11-10 and in danger of missing the MAC Freedom playoffs by one game. King's College is currently 11-9 and holding the fourth and final playoff spot with one game remaining against DelVal, on Monday. If the Monarchs defeat the Aggies they will make the playoffs, if they lose, Manhattanville claims the fourth seed. The top-three seed are already set with Misericordia in first place followed by DeSales and Wilkes.
The Aggies and the Monarchs will square off in Wilkes-Barre at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
