DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University's
Chris Coyle surpassed the 100-goal mark for his career, but Manhattanville College spoiled the Aggies' Senior Day by coming from behind for the 16-14 win.
The win, combined with another result in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom, put the Valiants (8-8, 3-4) in the conference playoffs for the first time since 2004. DelVal finished its fourth season of intercollegiate play with a 3-13 overall record and a 1-6 mark in the league.
DelVal celebrated its first, four-year senior class in program history as Coyle,
Matt Brady,
Cori Grobes,
Zach Haid,
Alex Hardy,
Nick Shendge,
Trevor Smith,
Zach Winfield and
Chris Wren were honored in a pre-game ceremony.
The Aggies then came flying out of the game as Shendge's tally with 6:52 left in the opening quarter capped a 3-0 start. Manhattanville tied the game early in the second before
Jordan Smith got his second of the afternoon for a 4-3 DelVal lead. Coyle then got free with 9:42 left in the half and hit twine for his 99
th career goal. The Valiants notched the next three tallies before
PJ Rafferty goal tied the game at 6-6 at the break.
Manhattanville went up 9-7 before Coyle set up Rafferty for a tally.
Matt Waibel then tied it up with 6:21 before the Valiants' Nick Delia put his team back up one, 10-9.
Shortly after, Manhattanville was called for a penalty, putting the Aggies a man-up. And it was time for some history as Coyle took a feed from Rafferty and rifled one past the keeper to reach the century mark in goals, the first DelVal men's lacrosse player to do so. It came with 2:44 left in the third.
Coyle was not done as he scored again with 49 seconds in the quarter. Teammate
Danny Scheib connected in the fourth for a two-goal lead. The teams then exchanged goals with the Aggies' tally coming from
Jordan Smith with 6:34 remaining for a 13-11 lead.
However, the Valiants scored five times in a four-minute span for a 16-13 advantage. Will Duval had two goals and two assists in the run. Freshman
Orterro Felton scored with 59 ticks left for DelVal, but it was Manhattanville that won and clinched a postseason spot.
Coyle finished his milestone day with three goals and one assist.
Jordan Smith also had three goals while Brasch and Rafferty also had three-point showings.
Jerad Wilson added five ground balls. Winfield got his first start in net and shined throughout as he finished with 17 saves and five ground balls.
Duval scored two goals and assisted on seven others for nine points. The Valiants also got a big day from Gianne Ciffone (four goals, two assists). Jason Frezza made 15 saves in net.
