DelVal Men's Lax Drops MAC Freedom Game At FDU

MADISON (NJ) – The Delaware Valley University men's lacrosse team led the way in most statistical categories, including a 22-11 edge in shots on goal, but it was host FDU-Florham that scored four unanswered goals in the second half to come away with the 8-6 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory.

The Aggies (3-11, 1-4 MAC Freedom) were in control for most of the first quarter, outshooting the Devils (5-7, 3-2) 7-1 and forcing them into four turnovers. Then with 2:41 left in the stanza, Matt Waibel broke through to give DelVal the 1-0 lead.

Less than five minutes into the second, Chris Coyle scored on a man-up situation off a feed from Dylan Brasch to make it a 2-0 game.

FDU quickly tied the game with two goals separated by a minute, 22 seconds. John Belanger and Will Charbonneau got the tallies with David Stewart and Tyler Garcia picking up assists. With under five minutes left before the break, John Guido set up Drew Bukoweic for his eighth goal of the season and a 3-2, Devils lead.

However, DelVal responded with two goals in a 15 second span to take a 4-3 lead at the half. First it was Jordan Smith setting up Coyle before Orterro Felton found Danny Scheib after the ensuing faceoff.

In the third quarter, the Devils had just two shots on goal but made the most of them as Charbonneau got his second goal of the game on a man-up situation and Stewart added his second late in the frame. The

Aggies had just three shots on goal in the frame, but Coyle made one count with his third tally of the day and the game was knotted at 5-5 going into the fourth.

In the final 15 minutes, it was FDU that scored three unanswered goals to go up, 8-5, with just 3:26 left in regulation. Coyle got one back for DelVal late in the game, but was not enough, as the Devils held on for the 8-6 win.

Coyle's four goals led all players in the game as he added four ground balls. Waibel finished with a goal and an assist for two points and four other Aggies registered a points. Bryan Thompson led the team with five ground balls and went 8-for-15 in faceoffs. Nick Shendge caused a team-best four turnovers to go with two ground balls. Gavin Yingling played all 60 minutes in net and made three saves.

For FDU, Belanger, Carbonneau, Guido and Stewart all had three-point games. Mike Gartner led the defense with three caused turnovers and five ground balls and Adam Reifer made 16 saves in net.

DelVal has just two conference games remaining on its schedule beginning at Wilkes University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
