DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Two-time defending Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom champion Manhattanville College moved into a tie for first place in the standings as it swept a Sunday doubleheader from host Delaware Valley University, 5-2 and 18-0.
The Valiants improved to 15-11 and 7-3 while the Aggies fell to 12-10 and 4-4.
DelVal hurt itself in the wet and windy conditions as the team committed 12 errors over the two games as only five of the 23 runs allowed by Aggie pitchers were earned. The first miscue came in the top of the first of the opener and it kept the inning alive. Evonne Torres took advantage and smacked a three-run homer for the early advantage.
Manhattanville got two more in the top of the third for a 5-0 lead. DelVal responded in its half of the third as
Jamie Stefani, who recorded her 100
th career hit in the first inning, ripped a two-out, two-run single to left-center that scored
Morgan Hawk and
Jess Ellick.
Neither team scored over the final four innings as Alycia Feeney picked up the win for the Valiants. Torres was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
Stefani was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. She also pitched seven innngs and allowed just one earned run while striking out six. Ellick had the lone remaining hit for the Aggies.
The second game also saw a first-inning error with two outs keep the stanza alive and an Aarin Hartenstein three-run homer made it 4-0. The Valiants then added two runs in the second, three in the third and five in the seventh. They racked up 14 hits, including two from Isela Casillas, who drove in three run. Hartenstein knocked in four runs and pitched a two-hit, nine-strikeout shutout.
Koirama Dudley and Mikayla recorded hits for DelVal.
Julie Burns took the loss on the mound.
DelVal will travel to nationally-ranked Moravian College for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 17 (3 p.m.).
