Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Aggies Complete Comeback, Defeat DeSales In OT, 9-8

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University men's lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, and Chris Coyle capped off the comeback 2:32 into the first overtime to propel the Aggies over visiting conference foe, DeSales University, 9-8.

The win moved DelVal to 1-1 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play and 3-8 overall while the Bulldogs fell to 0-2 and 3-7.

An unlikely suspect, freshman d-pole Orterro Felton, sparked the fourth quarter run as he finished a clear attempt and went right to goal to get his first collegiate tally and make it an 8-5 game with 10:36 left in regulation.

The Aggies remained three goals down until late in the game when PJ Rafferty dodged a pair of defenders and beat the keeper from 10 yards out with just 2:47 on the clock. Then it was freshman Matt Waibel that scored a pair of goals in a 51 second span to complete the comeback and tie the game at 8-8 with 1:05 left in regulation. Both goals were unassisted as Waibel navigated through the defense and scored from in close.

DelVal nearly ended the game in regulation, but Jordan Smith's shot rang off the post with 12 seconds on the clock and the game went into overtime. Bryan Thompson won two big face-offs down the stretch and the Aggies killed a penalty to key the comeback.

DeSales controlled the overtime faceoff, but freshman Jerad Wilson caused a turnover give DelVal the ball. Down the other end, the team worked the ball around until Coyle got it and dodged a pair of defenders before beating the keeper to the far post and sending the home side into a frenzy with a 9-8 win.

The Aggies started the game with two goals in the first 10 minutes by Coyle and Rafferty to take a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs answered by scoring the next three goals to take their first lead of the game at 3-2 late in the first half. DelVal tied it again with 19 seconds left before the break as Waibel got his first of the day.

The teams exchanged goals to start the third quarter before DeSales went on a 4-0 run that extended into the beginning of the fourth with Eric Magro scoring with 11:47 left in regulation.

That set the stage for the Aggies big comeback, resulting in their first ever victory over archrival DeSales.

Rafferty (two goals and one assist) and Waibel (three goals) led the team with three-point games with Rafferty also grabbing four ground balls. Coyle finished with two goals and two ground balls and Brandon Keller picked up an assist. Defensively, Wilson led the team with three caused turnovers and added three ground balls. Gavin Yingling started the game in goal and Nic Brown came in for the second half. Yingling was credited with the win after giving up three goals and making four saves.

For the Bulldogs, Motto had a game-high six points on four goals and two assists and Zach Bowen scored twice. Frank Krug had a game-high seven ground balls and led the squad with three caused turnovers.

DelVal will travel to Misericordia for another MAC Freedom game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
