DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Freshman
Julie Burns notched her first collegiate win on the mound and her first home run at the plate as Delaware Valley University split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Cedar Crest College. The Aggies got a 6-0 blanking in the opener before the Falcons had a 4-1 decision in the nightcap.
The split left DelVal with an 11-7 record and the Falcons with a 12-9 mark.
Burns took the mound in game one against a Cedar Crest team that had scored 89 runs over a five-game winning streak. However, the rookie kept the Falcons off the scoreboard with a four-hit, 97-pitch shutout. She did not walk a batter and struck out three.
Burns also gave the Aggies all the offense they needed in the second with a leadoff homer.
Morgan Hawk also drove in a run in the inning with a sacrifice fly.
It stayed 2-0 until the fifth when DelVal struck for four runs.
Jamie Stefani drove in two with a single while Burns added another RBI with a single up the middle. Hawk then got her second run batted in of the game with a single.
Burns was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Hawk was 1-for-2 and Stefani 1-for-4 as each drove in two.
In the nightcap, the Aggies turned to their ace in Stefani but Cedar Crest took a 2-0 lead with single tallies in the first and third. DelVal got one back in the fourth as Burns doubled and later scored on an RBI single by Hawk.
However, the Falcons got a pair of insurance runs in the seventh thanks to RBIs by Danielle Krispin and Dallas Horning. That was enough for Brenna Young, who allowed just one run and seven hits.
Stefani was 2-for-4 at the plate while Hawk was 2-for-3. On the mound, Stefani allowed just six hits and fanned nine.
