Women's Hoops Battles Back To Earn MAC Freedom Win At Eastern, 63-57

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Delaware Valley University 63, Eastern University 57
ST. DAVID'S (PA) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team erased a 13-point second half deficit to earn its first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory of the year, 63-57, at Eastern University.

The Aggies improved to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in league games, while the Eagles dropped to 4-7 and 0-2.

Jaelyn Harris hit a trey with 5:35 left in the third to give Eastern its largest lead of the game, 36-23, and the Eagles led by nine after three.

Eastern went up 10, 46-36, to start the final stanza, but the Aggies stormed back with a 17-7 run that spanned 6:25, to pull even for the first time since the 3:10 mark of the second quarter, at 53-53. Dom Moser led the spurt with nine points.   

The teams traded baskets until the score was knotted again at 57 apiece with 1:06 left in regulation. On the Aggies next possession, Amber Grohowski grabbed an offensive board and scored a layup to make it 59-57 with 42 seconds to play.

On the Eagles ensuing possession, Moser drew an offensive foul and Ashley Smink sliced to the rim for a layup at the other end to make it four point game, 61-57, with just 26 seconds left. Lauren Moretti hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to secure the six point victory.

DelVal outscored Eastern 27-12 in the final frame with Grohowski and Moser accounting for 17 of the points.

DelVal was awarded two free throws before the tip due to a technical foul against Eastern and Ashley Smink made one-of-two to give the Aggies a 1-0 head start before the clock ticked. The Eagles scored the first field goal of the game to take a 2-1 lead, but DelVal scored the next six points to go up, 7-2, late in the first quarter.

The Eagles scored five of the final six points to end the stanza and cut the Aggies lead to 10-7 after one.

Eastern took its first lead since the game was 2-1 when Viki Kneis hit a jumper to make it 16-15 with 4:12 left in the first half. Another field goal made it a three-point game, but Danielle Skedzielewski connected on a trey from the corner to tie it at 18-18 with 2:12 left before the break.

Eastern scored the final five points of the stanza to take a 23-18 lead into the locker room, and set the stage for the dramatic second half.

Moser recorded her first double-double as an Aggie with 16 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists and a steal. Skedzielewski dropped a team-high 18 points and added seven boards while Smink scored 14 and dished three assists. Grohowski logged big minutes off the bench as the team lost center Emily Kutskel to an injury late in the first half, and the senior delivered with eight points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.

Eastern was led by Regie Robinson's 21 points, 16 rebounds two steals and two blocked shots. Brianna Young-Harris also logged a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go with four assists, off the bench. Jaelyn Harris recorded 12 points.

DelVal is back at it on Monday with a non-conference game at Marywood University at 6 p.m.
