MARYWOOD (PA) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball fell into a funk in the second quarter and the Marywood University Pacers held on down the stretch to defeat the Aggies, 59-54, at home.
DelVal moved back to .500 at 4-4 overall while Marywood improved to 4-5.
The Aggies went on an 11-0 run in the first quarter that spanned 1:54 and gave them a 13-4 lead 4:30 into the game. They were 4-for-4 with three treys during that stretch, led by
Ashley Smink's six points.
Smink had 11 points and shot 3-for-5 from three point land, and
Danielle Skedzielewski scored eight as DelVal shot 8-for-19 (42.1%) from the field and held a 21-16 lead going into the second.
In the second quarter, the Aggies went cold. They were 0-for-12 from the field with six turnovers until
Lauren Moretti hit a 3-pointer with 33 seconds left in the half, and Marywood held a 33-24 lead into the third.
The Pacers got the first two baskets of the second half to take its largest lead of the game, 37-24.
Delaware Valley then went on a 12-2 run over the next six minutes to cut its deficit to four. Four different players scored in that stretch including Smink who cashed in a pair of three's compliments of Moretti and
Dom Moser.
Later in the third, Moser found Skedzielewski who connected from deep, but Marywood countered with a layup from Aryah Aungst to take a 47-41 lead into the fourth.
Emily Theobald put the pacers up by eight with a layup to start the third quarter before the Aggies made another charge. They went on an 8-0 run as Smink hit her sixth trey of the game, Moretti hit her third, and Moser's strip and score made it 49-49 with seven minutes left in regulation.
The game was tied again at 51-51 with just under five minutes to play before the Pacers went on an 8-3 run to close the game and earn the 59-54 victory.
DelVal shot 0-for-5 from the field and 3-for-8 from the free throw line down the stretch. For the game, the Aggies shot 19-for-60 (31.7%), 10-for-26 (38.5%) from deep, and 6-for-12 from the charity stripe. Rebounds were even for both sides, 41-41.
Smink finished with 25 points, including the six three's, and Skedzielewski notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Moser finished with a team-high 12 boards and added four points, two steals and a block. Moretti also had two steals and finished with 11 points.
For Marywood, Aungst had a game-high 17 points to go with nine rebounds and Natasha Hessling got a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Emily Theobald also scored 12 points and had two blocked shots.
The Aggies have 10 days off before they host Penn State - Abington on December 20 at 6 p.m.
