DOYLESTOWN (PA) – In a back-and-forth, evenly matched non-conference tilt, the Delaware Valley University men's basketball team used a late 3-pointer to send the game to overtime, but a put-back layup by Evan Wang late in the extra session secured an 87-85 victory for Hood College.
The Aggies fell to .500 on the year at 2-2 overall while the Blazers improved to 5-1.
DelVal trailed by one with 1:22 left in regulation when
Lybrant Robinson drove to the right and finished off the glass, but the ref emphatically waved off the basket and signaled an offensive foul. The Aggies were forced to foul Keith Claiborne, Jr. to send him to the line with 27 seconds left, and he converted both free throws to give Hood a 77-74 lead.
Coming out of a timeout, head coach
Mark Seidenburg called Robinson's number again, and the sophomore delivered a three from straight-away to tie the game at 77-77 with seven seconds left.
The Blazers had a good look at a trey on the other end as the buzzer sounded, but the shot was off target and the game went to overtime.
Hood got the first four points of the extra session to go up, 81-77, but DelVal's defense locked in, forcing three turnovers, and the team went a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe to take an 85-84 lead with just 33 seconds remaining.
On the Blazers next possession, they were forced to take a timeout in the offensive end with 14 seconds left. Out of the break, Jared Ruiz worked a turn-around jumper in the lane that clanked off the iron and bounced right to Evan Wang who put it back in to make it 86-85 with just five seconds on the clock.
DelVal quickly crossed mid-court and called timeout with three seconds left. Sophomore
Damian Washington had been shooting over 50-percent from 3-point land on the season, and the Aggies got him open for a good look from the right elbow, beyond the arc, but the shot caught the back of the rim and Jared Ruiz secured the rebound for Hood with .4 seconds on the clock.
DelVal fouled Ruiz and he made one-of-two for the 87-85 final.
Hood led by as many as 14 in the early parts of the first half, but the Aggies fought back with a 19-4 spurt that spanned over seven minutes to take a 29-28 lead with 3:25 left before the half.
Mike Cianciulli and
Damani Myers each hit a pair of treys to highlight that run and Cianciulli added another before the break as the teams went to the locker room knotted at 32-32.
Action was back-and-forth in the second half with six lead-changes until the squads were met at 60-60 with 7:44 left on the clock. From there, DelVal went on an 8-0 run book-ended by Myers and Cianciulli 3-pointers to take a 68-60 lead. It maintained a lead up until the three-minute mark of regulation when a fast-break layup by Evan Wang put Hood on top, 73-71, and ultimately setup the dramatic finish.
Matsinye and Robinson each finished with 21 points to lead the Aggies with Matsinye leading all players in the game with eight assists and four steals to go with one blocked shot. Washington led the team with nine rebounds and two blocked shots to go with 16 points on 2-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc. Cianciulli hit five three's for 15 points and Myers made four to finish with 12 points while also contributing four assists, two steals and one block. Cianciulli added five assists.
For Hood, Mason Wang led the way with 27 points and three steals while his brother, Evan Wang, dropped 21 points and had four assists. Ruiz added 12 points and paced the team with seven rebounds and Michael Riley finished with 10 points and five boards.
