DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of William Patterson University, 62-48, in the first round of the Scotty Wood Tournament at Muhlenberg College.
It was the third consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) team that the Aggies (2-1) faced this season, and the first one that they lost to, as they upended Stockton University and Rowan University at home.
The team's traded baskets throughout the first quarter and played to five different ties.
Dom Moser and
Ashley Smink each hit a trey and Moser had five to pace the squad through the first 10 minutes.
Carolyn Hill and Julie Rovito combined for nine points in the stanza to lead the Pioneers (1-1) to a 14-12 advantage after one.
William Patterson opened up a nine point advantage with an 11-4 spurt to start the second capped by an Anaajah White 3-ponter that made it 25-16.
Smink halted the run with seven straight points of her own and
Danielle Skedzielewski and
Sarah Wills added layups to knot the game again, 25-25. DelVal continued its spurt and eventually regained a lead at 29-27.
Chloe Kasbarian connected on a long trey just before the halftime buzzer to give the Pioneers a 32-29 lead at the break.
William Patterson outscored DelVal 30-19 in the second half and held the Aggies to just seven points in the final stanza.
DelVal went cold after the break and shot just 6-of-17 from the field, 0-for-7 from beyond the arc, and 7-for-12 from the charity stripe as the Pioneers came away with the 62-48 victory.
Smink led the Aggies with 16 points and
Lauren Moretti followed with 10, but added three steals. Skedzielewski paced the squad with eight boards and added six points while playing all 40 minutes.
Sarah Wills came off the bench to shot 3-for-3 for six points. Moser played just 18 minutes after leaving the game with an injury, and she had five points, three assists and a pair of steals.
Three players placed in double figures for William Patterson. Rovito led the way with 17, followed by 14 from Hill and 10 from Alisa Giordano. Rovito also had team-highs of seven boards, five assists and two steals.
The Aggies will take on Penn State Berks in the consolation game of the tournament after the Lions fell to host Muhlenberg, 64-39.
