DelVal Field Hockey Honors Seniors, Nearly Spoils Eastern Playoff Bid

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team celebrated its seniors in its final home game of the season, but it was visiting Eastern University that scored late in the second half to earn the 2-1 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory.

The Aggies (5-11, 0-7 MAC Freedom) have just one game remaining on their schedule as they head to Bryn Athyn College for a non-conference showdown at 12 p.m. on Saturday. That means tonight was the final home game in the careers of the team's three seniors: Timera Brooks-Watts, Aimee MacFarland, and Nicole Smythe. MacFarland served as a team captain this year and she and Brooks-Watts have been members of the squad all four years. Smythe joined the team her junior season after playing two seasons with the DelVal women's basketball team.

With the win today, the Eagles finished league play 4-3 (6-11 overall) and clinched a berth in the MAC Freedom playoffs as the four seed.

Eastern controlled play in the early going of this game, but the Aggies defense held strong led by a defensive save from the senior captain MacFarland.

DelVal's offense responded in kind with the first strike of the game after a corner opportunity. Jess Dixon played the corner ball to the top of the arch and, after a scramble in front, Courtney Austin was able to poke the ball across the goal line for the 1-0 lead 13:13 into the contest.

The Aggies created a number of opportunities to extend their lead before the break, but to no avail. Alexa Aguilar had two shots including a chance off a corner play that she sailed just over the cage.

In the second half, the Eagles tied the game at one apiece just 5:30 in. After a transition play led to a loose ball in front, it was Becky Howard that gathered and found the back of the cage off an assist from Alli Dickinson.

Down the other end, DelVal's Jess Dixon blasted a shot toward the far post, but Ashley Smith extended her right leg to get a pad on it and keep it out of the cage.

With less than 10 minutes left in regulation, Eastern capitalized on one of its six penalty corner chances in the period. Hannah Doll took the corner and passed to Joelle Wash who blasted a shot through traffic passed the keeper for what proved to be the game-winner.

The Aggies finished the game with five shots on goal and four corner opportunities. Austin had the lone tally and Sadie Strober picked up the assist. MacFaralnd and Mackenzie Rickerhauser each recorded a defensive save and Dixon had two shots on goal. Kita Konerth played all 70 minutes in cage and made six saves.

The Eagles got 10 shots on cage with 14 corner chances and Marley Redfield made four saves in goal. Howard and Wash had the team's goals with Dickinson and Doll getting credit for the helpers.
