CENTER VALLEY (PA) – DeSales University placed four players in double-digit scoring en route to a 78-56 home triumph over visiting Delaware Valley University in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom showdown Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs improved to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in league play while the Aggies dropped to 2-11 and 0-2.
In the first half,
Branden Curry hit a 3-pointer to put DelVal on top, 10-8, 4:12 into the game. Then the Aggies offense went cold as they scored just one basket over the next six and a half minutes of action as the Bulldogs opened up an 18-12 advantage.
DelVal trailed by two after
JaDon Robinson drove the lane and found
Austin Stoeckel who laid it in to make it 22-20 with 5:10 left before the break. From there, the home team scored 11 of the final 13 points of the half to take a 33-22 advantage into the locker room.
In the second half, the Aggies were able to cut their deficit to single digits after Curry handed off to
Andre' Butler who stuck a 3-pointer to make it 44-36 with 14:15 still to play. However, that is the closest they would get the rest of the way as the Bulldogs led by as many as 26 in the second half en route to the 78-56 victory.
DelVal shot just 20-for-52 (38.5%) from the field and 9-of-29 (31%) from three while making 7-of-11 free throws. The team's leading scorer,
Alex Matsinye, was held to just five points on 2-of-5 shooting while grabbing three rebounds. Curry led the Aggies with 14 points, including a pair of treys, while dishing out three assists. Butler and
Damian Washington had eight points and four rebounds apiece while Butler notched a team-high five assists.
Kweku Dawson-Amoah was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field to lead DeSales with 22 points to go with five rebounds. Connor Jones followed with 17 points and Tracy Simsick finished with 15. James Smith rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points while adding six assists, five rebounds and three steals. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 28-for-47 from the field (59.6%) and 4-for-12 (33.3%) from three-point land.
DelVal will return to its home court for its first time in over a month when it hosts Wilkes University in a MAC Freedom tilt slated for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10.
